Steelers LB coach Keith Butler said Spence is a mack LB and will play special teams and provide depth behind Lawrence Timmons.
That helps make this pick understandable, ILB is a big need too.
Scouting report on him from draftcountdown.com mentions that he is an extremely hard worker and has fluid hips and is good in coverage. I'm loving both of those traits!
I hope I'm wrong. We don't want another Bruce Davis.
Davis didn't have the positives that Spence seems to have, though.
Davis was just a head-scratcher of a pick all the way through. Spence at least seems to have a great football IQ.
Spence also appears to be drafted to be an ILB in this system, so his brain may have a chance to play into things. We'll see. I'm pissed because I wanted one of the two NTs, but it was a given that an ILB would be taken in this draft with Farrior on the way out and Foote being on his last legs. Even if Sylvester is capable of being that starter someone needs to fill Sylvester's old role.
It may be a good pick...but damn it, I want Ta'amu.

Not until NT is taken care of, it doesn't. The D-line makes the linebackers, just like the O-line makes the running back.
It's not like Hampton isn't coming back this year, as well as McLendon to back him up. Maybe the Steelers just don't think any of the 3-4 NT's are worth taking at this point of the draft if at all?

I just caution people not to overreact. The Wallace pick was bashed at the time and turned out great.
I don't love the pick either. We really don't need a mack LB considering Timmons age. I'm not a fan of shooting for depth with your 3rd rounder. I still think you should be looking for a starter. I would have preferred one of the D-Line players or the RB Lamar Miller.
Yeah, just saw that. Bengals are having pretty good draft so far.
I doubt Ta'amu will be available for our 4th pick.
Yeah. So it's down to either Chapman or some late round developmental project type who is realistically unlikely to become a starter. Jean-Baptiste from Baylor? I watched a few Baylor games because I was a fan of RG3, and he flashed some ability.

At this point, you sort of have to treat every year like Hampton's last year, and McLendon sucks.

He's an interesting prospect...but I don't see him being more than a rotational player. We need to pick someone, though.
If the Steelers end this draft without a single NT drafted I'm going to be furious.

Yep.
Neither of the NTs we've talked about here would be ready to start on day one anyway. McLendon is a complete non-factor in the discussion to me. The Steelers clearly think much higher about him than anyone else does, but...**** me if they think he's Hampton's successor.
Why shouldn't he? Good football speed is a reasonable way of describing Sean Spence.
The kid can move. Part of it is because he's so instinctive that he rarely takes a false step, but he can close on anyone and he can get back in coverage. He's very fleet of foot, even if he doesn't run well in shorts. Who cares about that?

I already voiced my hope of us taking Miller this round but everyone told me he wasn't worth it

Miller would have been a worthwhile pick where we drafted.
You got flack for saying we should trade up for him
But I think with those of us harping on the NT position...we're going to complain about just about anyone drafted in that 3rd round that wasn't a NT...especially because of who was on the board for that pick.
If Ta'amu is, somehow, still on the board when we pick in the 4th round and we don't go with him...the good will of those first two picks goes out the window with me.
i can get behind an intelligent sideline-to-sideline athlete working into the Foote/Sylvester competition. i'd like to see him in nickle packages. task 1 is to acquire good players, task 2 is to get good value. if you do enough of the first, you can make up for deficiencies in the later.
