Laraque has one less fight this season (8 fights, and 7 for Brashear) than all of our players combined (9 fights)... They are fighting less, but they're still fighting. And for goons, they're ok at playing the game (they wouldn't play that much anyway), but that's only my opinion...

Was this a joke?
Wth the 7 millions increase in cap room for everybody those player will go for no less than 6M$ a year and I actually think that Elias will get the maximum aloud by the CBA.

If were looking for offensive help for Markov, I would say we should go after Kim Johnson. He has some offensive skills and won't hurt you defensively. He might take about 2M-3M though...

We are in a great position right now because if we don't sign anyone, we will still be in a good position with a good team in place. Don't forget that our young players will be even better then they are right now and our core player will stay in Montreal.

And if we do sign someone, we will probably have to trade someone...

Fowards:

Arnott (we would have to trade Bonk or Ribeiro)
Samsonov(we would have to trade a winger)

I don't really want anybody else because I want Kostitsyn in Montreal...

Defence:

Chara and Redden if we want to hit a homerun but it will probably not happened...
Markov, Kubina and Kuba(we would have to trade a defenceman)

I beleive that one of Kubina, Markov and Kuba is a possible signing for us...not too expensive, can play on the PP to help Andrei...

I beleive that Gainey is confortable with the 6 defenceman of the team...he will most likely try to bring a top end D, but if he can't do it, there's no big deal.

7.8? No way...only players like Jagr, Lidstrom, Forsberg, Big Joe would get that much. 5.5 to 6 seems more fair. I agree, those guys will go for the big money...The stars nowadays will all ask more then 5M cause they know teams with still alot of cap room will give them alot.

Toronto didn't add any high-paid UFAs for this season.

Well, every team as a minimum of 7 millions of cap space, with an average closer to 15M$ and a lack of prime UFA. I think that everything is in place for a bidding war for the few big names in the market (Lidstrom, Chara, Redden and Elias).

I dont think we should be chasing any big ticket UFAs.

On Offense: Even replacing Zednik for next year seems like a useless exercise since it is his contract year and I look for him to play most of the season like he has played since the Olympics. We can just cut him loose when his contract expires, instead of being stuck with another player who is Zednik's equivalent on a long term contract, while Selanne is not leaving California. Centers are a rarity this off-season. Guys like Savard and Arnott have too many warts to overlook to be handed multi-year deals. Sakic isn't leaving Colorado. We are kinda stuck with Ribs, but one thing we could do is give Plex the number 2 slot and get someone like Maccauley who can fill several roles.

On Defense: I would try to upgrade the D at Bouillon's position, someone to play with Dandenault and settle him down (maybe a Carney). With Souray, Rivet, and Markov becoming UFAs after next year, we will need money if we are to re-sign all three.

We have come this far with the a young club, consistently inserting 3 or four young guys each year for the last three, why not one more year and you have the majority of your future core with at least rookie years completed.

I agree 100%, one or two mid-level UFA's to surround the kids and bring experience for a yound club.
I don't even care if we get a forward or not as it could give a chance to Chip or Lapierre, who knows.
But I think we need a top 4/5 defenceman, wether by trade or UFA signing.

I think the biggest bang for the buck would be to get a guy like Redden or Chara not only to boost our team but as a strike against a dominant team in our division.

Chara as a replacement to Souray would be quite a good acquisition. I am sure that Souray packaged with a Zednik could fetch us something good. Peraps a guy like Mark Bell for Souray, Ribs and a pick... Acquiring another Dmen might also allow us to move Dandenault, perhaps a guy like Salei or Gauthier...

I could definitively see a lineup like this one next year...

Higgins, Koivu, Ryder
Bell, Plekanek, Kovalev
Bulis, Bonk, (Kostitsyn or Perez or Latendresse) --- May the best guy win
Begin, (Lapierre or Chipchura), (Ferland or Murray) --- May the best of the two win

(Chara or Redden), Rivet
Markov, Komisarek
(Salei or Gauthier), Bouillon

We seem to be a bad team without Markov so I think we really need another top 2 defenceman. It don't have to be Chara or Redden...just a good defenceman who can do the job done if Markov is injured...

But we don't have to trade Souray. He's a top 4 and a pretty good one. I would keep him for sure. And we can't change half of our blue line in the off season...it doesn't make any sence to me...

I don't think we need to significantly spend for a forward, except maybe a veterant role player to play on the third or fourth line. We have some young guns that will only get better, and plenty of interesting prospects in the pipeline.

The real problem is in D, and that's going to be an issue for years to come as long as we don't address it. Our D core (Markov, Rivet, Souray) isn't going to get any better, and while they are good players, we simply lack depth in this area. Worst, our prospect pipeline is pretty poor in this position, with perhaps only Emelin and O'Byrne who could potentially make an impact on the long term. Almost all NHL contenders have a great and deep defensive corp to back them, and we'll have to do the same.

Koivu and Kovalev are the two veterant players our offense is basing itself on, at least for the next few years. Both player's contract will end in three years. That gives us a window to consider if we really want to make a run for contendership ( I won't say "for the cup" as it scares too much people). If we want to make a move, we need to make it pretty soon, and this year has many very good veterant D are on the market. With the departure of Theo, I just can't see Gainey not make a splash. I would personnally overpay for someone like Chara (yeah, I know everyone will want him) but I'll certainly settle for someone else. We need a top 4, ideally top 2 right defenseman.
