He seems like the kind of player who could turn into a consistent bottom-6 player, with speed, a little offense and alot of nastiness to his game.

I'm glad they got this done. The NHL needs more Latvians in their nightmares.

I must say, I'm very happy about this deal, I'd really love seeing more Latvian players in NHL. Hope he gets in.

Even if he makes it, I doubt he'll be a player that will cause nightmares to others.

Well deserved contract for Pelss, and it's very nice to see us locking up some of our prospects. It certainly will be fun to watch how he develops.

When can you get rid of a contract? Say Oilers are not resigning Barker, can they say that now or do they have to wait til July 1 for the contract to expire.

If this is the case we may lose someone good.

UNSIGNED 2010 PICKS (Rights expiring June 1st, 2012)

EDMONTON: Jeremie Blain, D (Victoriaville, QMJHL) [4th round pick, 91st overall]; Brandon Davidson, D (Regina, WHL) [6th round pick, 162nd overall]; Drew Czerwonka, LW (Kootenay, WHL) [6th round pick, 166th overall]; Kristians Pelss, RW (Edmonton, WHL) [7th round pick, 181st overall]. now signed. Only 1 contract left. Hopefully I am wrong on this.

Pelss' ELC doesn't start until next season, so it doesn't count against our 50 until after July 1, I think.

He could turn out to be a Versteeg like player modest junior stats that transfer over to Nhl . He has world class speed Nhl shot . There seeing something they like or would not sign him.

8 ufa's on july first so that should give us some room on the contract cap.

Ryan Smyth
Josh Green
Lennart Petrell
Darcy Hordichuk
Taylor Chorney
Yann Danis
Bryan Rodney
Ryan Keller

Only one out of that group that I don't know is Keller, the only one of them I want us to hold onto is Petrell. Maybe Hordichuk (if we get a coach that uses him)

Going to look into Keller to see if hes worth holding onto.

Keller has 49 pts in 71 games 5'10" 190 lbs 38 pim 4 pts in the playoffs plays RW

I would consider keeping Petrell, Chorney and Keller from that list.

I really think the key is to be giving guys like Josh Green and Ryan Keller AHL deals. I just don't know that they would take that type of contract unless we can give them 500k+ and even then they probably shoot for the two-way deal that gives them a slim chance at the NHL.

There is absolutely No point in keeping Chorney.

Exactly. We would have Marancin, Teubert, Plante, Fedun, Davidson/Blain plus AHL vets already in the minors. Chorney is very redundant at this point.

Pelss is an interesting prospect. I like his potential as a 3rd liner (or at least reasonable depth player) down the line. You still need depth.

I look at him as Reddox with more size and physicality.

I sure hope not. Reddox really didn't impress me offensively

I think he's a decent option to have for depth in the AHL.

Looking at Capgeek.com... The Oilers have 49 signed before Pelss to that would give them 50 contracts IF they re-signed everyone. Of course many on the list below won't be re-signed so they'll have plenty of space to juggle contracts... including signing Yakupov to a max ELC contract so he can suit up with them for this season and pot 30+ goals next season playing with RNH on the PP. Not that I'm getting ahead of things just a bit.

1 Smyth, Ryan UFA (50-50 chance he won't be back)
2 Horcoff, Shawn
3 Hemsky, Ales
4 N.-Hopkins, R.
5 Hall, Taylor
6 Gagner, Sam RFA (definitely a question mark about what they'll do with Sammy)
7 Belanger, Eric
8 Jones, Ryan
9 Eberle, Jordan
10 Eager, Ben
11 Petrell, Lennart UFA (hope he'll be back but I could see them cutting him)
12 Omark, Linus RFA (99.9% chance he'll be dealt this summer or at the draft)
13 Hartikainen, T.
14 VandeVelde, Chris RFA (could easily be dealt away)
15 Hordichuk, Darcy UFA (easy to cut loose)
16 Whitney, Ryan
17 Schultz, Nick
18 Smid, Ladislav
19 Barker, Cam RFA (as good as gone)
20 Sutton, Andy
21 Peckham, Theo RFA (very likely to be dealt)
22 Petry, Jeff RFA (should be re-signed soon.)
23 Teubert, Colten
24 Potter, Corey
25 Khabibulin, N.
26 Dubnyk, Devan RFA (should be re-signed without much difficulty.)
27 Paajarvi, Magnus
28 Plante, Alex RFA (could be dealt or re-signed. No huge deal either way.)
29 Hamilton, Curtis
30 Fedun, Taylor
31 Arcobello, Mark
32 Martindale, Ryan
33 Lander, Anton
34 Pitlick, Tyler
35 Marincin, Martin
36 Rajala, Toni
37 Chorney, Taylor UFA (could be gone if he wants a shot at an NHL job elsewhere.) Likely a career AHL'er no matter what.
38 Roy, Olivier
39 Bunz, Tyler
40 Danis, Yann UFA (like to see them re-sign him because he's a very good goalie and is great on the OKC team and solid as a callup to Edmonton as well.)
41 Keller, Ryan UFA (career AHL player... could easily be cut loose)
42 House, Tanner
43 Abney, Cameron
44 Cornet, Philippe
45 Green, Josh UFA (obviously a career AH player... and at 34 he's easily expendable)
46 Tyrvainen, Antti
47 Tremblay, Hunter RFA (He's 26 and has only had 1 full year at the AHL level... I'd re-sign him because he has some potential but he's another expendable asset if need be.)
48 Kytnar, Milan RFA (Regressed to the point where he'll almost 100% be jettisoned from the org.)
49 Rodney, Bryan UFA (AHL dman... good for depth on OKC but again expendable if they have to move a contract.)

I don't see any problems in terms of contract room space. The Oilers have many contracts (18 combined UFA and RFA contracts) that they could simply not re-sign to make room for others (Yakupov/Reider/Justin Schultz or any other UFA signings etc).

He's got a motor that will take him places. My feeling is he's Liam Reddox 2.0, and that's IMO worth a contract. His offense and size will always hold him back i'd imagine but he should bring a lot of competitivness to the org. and may be able to play a bottom 6 role one day.

I hope to see the team announce the signing of Brandon Davidson and Jeremie Blain to their entry-level contracts soon. Both have enough upside to warrant an ELC in my opinion.
