CBA expires on September 15th. The buyout period is June 15th to the 30th.

Given that Gomez will still be on the team's payroll, I am guessing that an amnesty buyout clause would allow a team to buy out any player who is on their payroll.

My understanding was that Gomez has a no-trade clause; would that require Gomez's okay for any movement to the minors? If so, it could well explain why he wasn't buried in the minors.

Bingo! Decisions must be made based on what is known. As I have mentioned, any amnesty buyout clause would likely allow teams to buy out any player who is still on a team's payroll/salary cap sheet.

Nope, he has a limited no trade, not a full no movement. He can be sent to the AHL.

We still have Kaberle if there is an amnesty buyout clause too.

If this is true, well i can't say that i'm shocked...but would have much prefered they simply bury Gomez in the minors and re-evaluate if/when a potential amnesty buyout became an option.

I can understand the desire to cut ties and start fresh, but that cap hit is going to hurt for the next two seasons. Surely though this move is something that would have been discussed during the GM interview process. Bergevin has to be completely on board with it.

Thread title makes it pretty clear that this a report from Louis Jean, and should only be taken as such.

It'll only be "official" the day the Canadiens announce they've bought him out.

The smartest thing would be to buy him out only if there's an amnesty buyout period.

If not keep him and only send him down to Hamilton if the cap space is needed and/or if he isn't helping the team.

As bad as Gomez is he's a playoff point producer. We might want him come playoff time so it would be stupid to buy him out and then have him on the books for the next 4 yrs instead of the next 2.

Louis Jean is the one reporting the Gomez buyout report on sportsnet but he seems to have gotten the rumour from Dave Morrissette from TVA Sport. So I really dunno how credible this all is.

Something weird going on in MTL. Habs' website, for a time this a.m., announced team was buying out Scott Gomez's contract. Not there now.
Geoff Molson's quite a lad eh?

I'm thinking its not very credible...however Bob McKenzie just tweeted that for a brief time this AM it was on the Habs website.

Now, I am not the best with salary cap things, so pardon me if this is really stupid, but:

I think we all want Gomez gone. We have had to deal with him and his hulking salary long enough. And yes, by the sounds of it, I agree that burying him in the minors would be the best thing to do, but isn't buying him out better than nothing? Sure, we have to deal with that useless cap hit but it doesn't seem to be the worst thing in the world.

Better than letting a $7.5mil useless plug continue to play.

Am I right, or is there some misunderstanding I have?

Buying out Gomez's contract, of course, is the dumbest thing any organization could possibly do in a salary cap world. Here's why:

If MTL sends Gomez to AHL, it frees up $7.3M in cap space each of next two seasons. Price to be paid for that is Gomez's $10M in salary.

MTL could save $3.3M cash by buying out Gomez contract but would have salary cap hits of $3.5M, $4.5M, $1.66M and $1.66M for each of 4 yrs.

No organization that has money (MTL, TOR, NYR etc) would or could justify a buyout that would create dead cap space to save a few million $.

Habs can bury him in the minors for the next two seasons at a total cost of $10 million and it frees up $7.3 in cap space for each season.

To me its a slam dunk move to bury him.

He just retracted that saying it was another sports news station that reported it.

We still can't ignore the political implications of burying him in the minors. Players don't exactly beat down the doors at the Bell Centre to play here. Just saying.

I can't see that detracting players from coming to Montreal.. If anything Montreal has been quite patient with Gomez. No one can expect the team to keep him on the books at that price for his output... Also it hasn't stopped people from going to NY.

Also with Gomez even on the book we won't be able to sign anyone anyway
