but it isnt a simple joke, and its completely about race..so?

when getting this jersey made, the guy HAD to have thought to himself, "this is probably going to piss some people off"...and he still went ahead and did it anyway. making him an attention ***** and a d-bag.

Although I completely understand where you're coming from, I think that's being a little overdramatic.

As long as the government isn't getting involved, people still have the freedom of thought. It's whiny to complain that feeling uncomfortable in certain uber-PC environments is equivalent to "not being allowed" that freedom, as if political correctness is your dad and he'll ground you for something that he doesn't like.

They're your thoughts, you know they're perfectly valid, it's not such a terrible thing to have to fight for them once in a while as society goes through its loopy, extreme pendulum swings, jumping from one contrived moral pedestal to another.

Well....I guess the majority of the league should take offense to this jersey

You are correct sir..you are exactly right. I am Simmonds fan (Shjon Podein, Linsman Tocchet my other faves) and you are one who just simply "gets it" thanks. I am the guy who wore it.

I laughed. Don't care about the guy wearing it enough to make assumptions of what kind of person he is. If anything he is making light of the situation.

I wonder what is the meaning of this thread. (controversy)
Simmonds is a black individual and kudos for the shirt maker.

So, that makes me an attention ***** and a d-bag every time I wear my Morbid Angel t-shirt that says "Your God Is Dead" on the back?

On second thought it probably does a bit. Although pissing people off wasn't my intention when I got it.

As a pretty evangelical Christian, I believe you have every right to wear that shirt. I'd be ticked off if you wore it to a funeral, but your opinion is your opinion. This is kind of like the kid in Nova Scotia who got suspended for wearing a t-shirt saying "Life is Wasted Without Jesus". The principal said it's offensive for the other student and gave the kid the boot after he refused to stop wearing it.

Wow, that is just awful. How can one sacrifice freedom of speech (I know it's a public school and there are some limitations, but still) because some people might get offended by a slogan on a t-shirt (which isn't offensive anyway)? I'm an atheist and a strong opposer to organized religion but if I was a student at that school I would protest this decision. Oh, and don't worry, I respect other people's believes, wearing that shirt to a funeral wouldn't even cross my mind.

The guy was on 97.5 with Mike Miss. Sounded like a nitwit, but he did not at all sound mean. Just going for a cheap laugh with a bar type joke. Claims he was making fun of "what your girlfriend / bandwagon fan calls Simmonds." Oh, and that Simmonds is one of his favorite players, plays like a Philadelphian athlete should, etc.

It's not racist and I'd go as far to say it's funny. Face it, he's the only black guy on the Flyers and one of the few black guys in NHL hockey as a whole therefore he's commonly referred to as "the black guy".

I didn't think you would (t-shirt to funeral). What made me laugh was picturing wearing my Black Sabbath concert t-shirt to church one week.

Would a basketball team jersey be racist if it said "The White Guy" on top of the number of the only white guy on the team, and a black guy was wearing the jersey?

No, but it still wouldn't be funny either.

Psst.

Saying something stands out for being "not funny" is just another way of saying you think it's offensive without actually having the courage to say you think it's offensive.

True story.

(now, whether the person actually finds it offensive, rather than just wanting to be seen protesting a little [without committing too much], that's way more psychologically and sociologically complex.)
