This was speculation from a reporter. There has been no mention of what our new GM will do with Gomez. Smart money is on Gomez getting buried unless the Habs do not need his cap-space.

AHL would make the most sense...

However Ottawa will take him off your hands if he comes with that 3rd overall pick!

Buying him out would be a moronic move. You have a new GM coming in and a team with hugely deep pockets, why saddle your rookie GM with 8 mil less of cap space his 1st two years, especially with young veterans like Price, Subban, Pacioretty etc needing new deals.

There are 20+ other teams who would too.

This. That $8 million in cap space could be used so many better ways to give your young guys new deals. Burying him in the AHL is the only option for Montreal, IMO. He's not living up to his contract (AT ALL) but he's far too expensive to buy out.

if they don't intend to spend to the cap then this isn't a bad idea at all

Why did it take so long??

Terrible hockey player. Just painful to watch. Bury him, buy him out, whatever; I just don't want to see him on NHL ice anymore.

Gomez will either be (A) bought out, or (B) invited back to camp, or (C) traded.

If it's (A), well, we'll know in another month and a half. After which, I think it's very likely he re-signs somewhere as a scrap-heap UFA on a cheap deal. He'll be back in the NHL.

If it's (B), well, (B.1) is he actually somehow manages to make the team. He raised hopes of a bounce-back with a decent camp last year, despite some injury foreshadowing. And he hasn't really lost his speed, which is about his only real asset anyway. (B.2) is that he gets waived to the minors. Then there are some (B.2.i), (B.2.ii)'s about whether he reports or not. Or whether recall waivers might be tried.

If it's (C)... well, I think it's highly unlikely the Habs find a trade, but if they do it probably has to involve a fairly sizeable counter-dump salary coming back to the Habs. The Habs aren't going to pay assets to make Gomez disappear (don't have enough spare assets to be able to afford to), but could conceivably take a counter-albatross back (although I sure hope not). Anyway, slim odds here either way.

And that's without considering the option of a labour interruption or any conjectures of compliance buyouts arising.

So we'll find out about Door (A) first anyway. But it's still a relatively long way off. The speculation has been years in the running now, however, so I guess 40-something more days does make it seem pretty close in a relative sense.

Question. Would a team pay 900k for him to play on their 3rd line?

Teams should at least be willing to take the chance at that price level IMHO. Because it's not much money to write off if he still flounders. The really key thing about him is that he just doesn't look like that different as a player from the days when he was getting 50-60-70 points. He's not getting the points, but he still has basically all the same skills, same speed through the neutral zone, same faults.

To me, it'd be a worthwhile gamble - assuming your team was desperate enough to be searching the free agent bargain bin/scrap heap to begin with. Best case, he was just in a major funk as a Hab and some new chemistry / coaching / linemates / luck gets him back to being a decent player. Worst case, he's basically what the Habs have had the last couple years. Which is still a guy with good speed, Cup experience, and who is reportedly well-liked by teammates. A utility infielder or waiver wire fodder, either way, at $900k it's not a big deal.

Maybe there's still hope for Gomez, if Marc Bergevin is able to get Zach Parise (free agent this summer) during the draft, just think what the Parise-Gomez-Gionta line could do. That line was absolutely beast during the 05-06 and 06-07 season.

Gomez 2005-2006 84pts / 2006-2007 60pts
Gionta 2005-2006 89pts / 2006-2007 45pts
Parise 2005-2006 32pts / 2006-2007 62 pts
(Parise didn't do too bad during his rookie year and sophomore year.)

EDIT: He didn't play with Parise, he played with Elias.
