ASU ice hockey has been positively impacted by the growth in youth hockey here in Phoenix. The ASU program has improved by leaps and bounds in the last 5 years or so.

Funny, article brought back memories of playing kitchen hockey with my son and a foam puck when he was four.

Anyone else enjoying playing a team that isn't followed by hockey isolationist snobs who think they're too good for us and that we should just quit following hockey and go away and leave hockey to Canada or the Northeast where it only belongs?

I know very little about college hockey (or college sport in general) beyond the big names. How old are these D-1 players? What colleges are they playing for? Is this like the famous Shattuck St.Mary's program? Are they hoping to be recruited by a big NCAA team next year?

University age, so about 18-21 or so. ASU hockey in particular is a "club" sport (i.e. not school-sponsored), so in theory, even a non-student could play for them, but perhaps the league they play in/their internal policy is only to select ASU students to play.

Not sure how the club hockey programs like ASU relate to the NCAA-sponsored ones. I don't really follow it, but I imagine it's perfectly feasible for an ASU player, for example, to get recruited to transfer to an NCAA hockey program.

The bigger programs typically have players more in the 19-24 range. Guys who play in the USHL or BCHL or some similar league before starting their college careers.

Oh "D-1" = NCAA.. okay yeah I know NCAA level. Was confused by the fact the article never mentioned the NCAA, just USA Hockey so assumed it was a level below that for younger players like the SSM program.

That Arizona matched New Hampshire is the most surprising stat.

When the journalist says "produced last year", does that mean 15 rookies last year were from Arizona or 15 players in total?
