Rick Dudley is expected to become the next assistant general manager of the Montreal Canadiens. However, the move from Toronto to Montreal is complicated.

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke and newly appointed Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin are in discussions over Dudley's jump from one team to the other.

Dudley, a member of Toronto's management team, has an "out" in his contract with the Leafs, but has done extensive work for Toronto on the upcoming NHL Draft and sources say Burke would prefer Dudley not join the Canadiens until after the Draft.

DarrenDreger:
Expect Rick Dudley to be soon named asst gm of the Mtl Canadiens. Marc Bergevin and Leafs gm Brian Burke are in discussions.

Dudley's move is complicated as he's done extensive work on Draft for Tor. Leafs would prefer his start with Mtl be delayed to after Draft.

I wasn't too thrilled about Bergevin becoming GM, but if he can get Dudley as AGM, then I will be one happy camper (as long as he keeps TT).

Good move. Next up is Quenneville or Vignault.

Dudley has a good eye for talent. I read an article a few months ago which discusses various trades and signings that were the result of Dudley's eye for talent, it left me impressed.

If true about the Draft, I can't blame the leafs really.

What is the tie between Bergevin and Dudley? I don't know much about Dudley...

Could of have been usefull because Bergevin admited not knowing a lot about the prospects. Having a objective & outside opinion could of have helped the scouting team.

Dudley said on TSN990 the other day that Trevor Timmins is considered to be in the elite of amateur scouting.

If anything, Dudley's move here confirms Timmins is here to stay.

Well then, it's all happening like they said it could. Interesting... in a good way. Love the idea of Timmins working with those guys, and before the draft at that.

Very true. I wonder if there's a possibility Burke and Bergevin work out a deal where they can use Dudley as a "lifeline" at the draft or something in that nature? Wild probably be hard to do though

I know. But in the scouting meetings, Dudley could of have brought the point of view of the Toronto scouts, basically to confirm what they already knew, or point out some new things. As much for the top prospects as the later ones. Especially if Toronto scouted a gem down deep.

Predictable but interresting news really ! I'm happy with that. Needed some strong experience to back up Bergevin and somebody he could trust ; Dudley fits the bill nicely !

The knowledge of draft picks will be discussed in depth until the actual draft takes place. The Leafs haven't made any firm choices yet and most likely will be debating late into the Entry Draft Evening, thus letting Dudley's remaining contract to be paid out being the stumbling block that needs to be settled.Good news for the Habs front office depth and experience getting another huge boost.

There was one I read a while back which was really good. I wish I had it. It stated the trades that Dudley fought for in other organizations as well as the players he targetted. It was pretty impressive.

Was Dudley the GM for Atlanta when they made the trades for Byfuglien and Ladd?

Two good talent evaluators on board? Together they can revamp the whole pro scouting aspect. Good news.

I said this to my buddy who is a Leafs fan. We will likely get Dudley but there's no way we get him before the draft because of the conflict of interest.

He has his moments, good and bad for sure, but I think in this capacity he will work. He has great experience and is at least tied into the old boys club which can only help a younger GM like Bergevin. He also probably knows the Habs and the Eastern Conference better than Bergevin too.

On TSN 990 Dudley said he was the one who first saw Timmins as a good hockey mind when he was a GM in Ottawa and promoted him. He rates Timmins as "elite" in terms of eye for talent. So I think there's strong chemistry and a strong team being formed here.

Worked together in Chicago for around 5 years.

Just in his short time in Atlanta, 2 STEALS:

Andrew Ladd for a 2nd in 2011 and a fading prospect in Ivan Vishnevskyi. Granted, the Hawks were in a tough spot due to their cap troubles.

Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart for Rich Peverley. Wheeler emerged as a real stud this year in Winnipeg. Peverley helped the goons win it all, but Wheeler is a much better asset.

In Tampa:

He traded a 5th for Dan Boyle. A #1 defenceman for virtually nothing.

He traded Cory Cross for Fredrik Modin. A solid top 6 winger for a mediocre defender.

He acquired Adrian Aucoin AND a 2nd for Dan Cloutier. For some reason he traded him just a few months later for Biron and a 2nd, it may have been for budget reasons.

He acquired Vinny Prospal for Ryan Johnson.

He acquired Khabibulin for Mike Johnson, Paul Mara and a 2nd.

Some major fleecings right there. TB doesn't win the cup without his work.

Edit: Holy ****, how could I forget...also signed Martin St. Louis as UFA in 2000. He basically acquired 3 of the 5 most important players of the 2004 Lightning for very little.
