If you could get 5 good years out of Lou, it still leaves you with 3 bad years at the tail end of the contract. What do you do with a 39 year old goalie, ready to retire but won't because the money is so good, with another $15.0 million left on his deal. He becomes untradeable because of age, but still occupies a huge hit against a cap and one of 2 roster spots. There is the AHL assignment I suppose.
Additionally, what makes Luongo's contract even more distressing is that no one knows how existing contracts will be rolled over into a new CBA.
A long term, big dollar commitment to any FA should be tempered by the fact that CBA negotiations are imminent.
I'd be doing cartwheels if I were a Canucks' fan and they got assets back for Luongo's contract. Nash could be heading towards a career decline. Most of the other rumoured additions are unlikely. Like Lupul/Gardiner and Phaneuf, whatever major splash Burke might make won't make it to media speculation unless someone gets lucky and guesses it.
Josh Harding might be the type of goalie to give a shot.
Honestly half those guys no way would end up here. I'd love Parise, Brown or Nash in that order. Though no rumors about Brown, Burke had a deal in place at the deadline until it was leaked to the media and Lambo nix'd the trade last mintue.
From watching the playoffs thought Parise is a wizard, what hands and great hockey IQ.
Brown is what Burke would call truculent ! with serious offensive skill, he would also make a great leader. Nash is still a 60pt getter, a case of a big man on the wrong team. Only concern is that he may die in Toronto's cut-throat market. Same goes for LU ! I'd love him to be our number 1 guy BUT he couldnt handle Vancouver pressure, so I doubt he could handle Toronto...unless of course his relationship with the stupid Van fans is to blame for his un-even play this year. Fact is this is the cheapest Roberto would ever be for any team to grab up....I see a huge issue with cap room regarding Tampa Bay snatching him up. I don't know about FLA, but if I am not mistaken I am pretty sure LU left on really bad terms with that club so I guess we will wait and see on that !
What about Timmy Thomas? I could see him end up in Toronto. No mystery is his getting older, and with their early exit, and Rask breathing down his neck maybe it will be a changing of the guard.
One thing is for certain. Burke did say "we don't have the personelle to get it done right now." Those are powerful words, and with Burke's neck on the line, I think we are in for the biggest summer in recent memory...fasten your seat-belts, cross your fingers !
That's just media speculation. It seems like the best fit for Luongo, but is it for Tampa? They already have Vinny's terrible contract. Can they afford another like that?
Tampa really? They just signed Stammer this past season, then they have Vinny, St. Louis and shortly Hedman to worry about....they take LU they will need to make a couple deals...maybe Burke finally lands Ryan Malone? Or maybe we get Vinny? I can almost bet, if we dont go for Vinny MTL will.
