everyone keeps poking and prodding at the garrison contract and no one other than soupy mentions Versteeg getting over 4 million for what? An inconsistent 20 goal scorer who was outstanding for 1/4 of the year and terrible the other 3/4. He is a defensive liability and some games there might as well be a ghost on the ice-who is more noticeable.
I've never said that he's worth it. Just that knowing DT, he likes to overpay "his guys", Brain is the perfect example.
I'd be pleasantly surprised if he gets less than 4.

I am agreeing with you. If i had a choice between throwing large sums of money in either versteeg or garrisions directions it would most certainly be pointed towards garrison. IMO he is much more valuable to this team.

In a vacuum, you could make this argument.
This is a team starved for scoring though. I'd look for other places to cut and keep Versteeg.
I think if Garrison wants to be back, Tallon will find a way to make it happen.
This team is set at D and net. Need help in top 6.

Offense is the name of the game in FA, not surprisingly, but Tallon was very direct about it, which stroke me.
He is very happy with the guys we have, and most important guys, Garry and Steeger, will stay. For sure. Tallon will overpay if need be. Contrary to the general feeling here, I think Garry is more expendable than Steeger, since we have Campbell and Kuli. If we loose any of our very few goal scorers, we'll be in deep ****. So, both stay. More interesting than their annual salary is the number of years they get. Hopefully that stays reasonable.
Sammy, Wolski, Ellerby, Clemmer.... Did not say much. Although I undestand why some say that WW and Clemmer are not coming back, I saw no such commitment from Tallon. I think it depends on factors not known yet. Surely no rush to sign them yet.
Interesting how he mentioned Petrovic a few times. Is he really that high on him?
Don't get me wrong, I love Kulikov.. But if we could somehow package him with Ellerby and maybe our 1st to get Yakupov, we gotta try..
Not happening. Teams don't trade players like Yakupov for packages like that. Yakupov is the best NHL prospect since Stamkos. Before his concussion and back injury, he was at 2 PPG pace in the OHL for 30 + games.
Kulikov is one of the best young Puck movers in the NHL. As an asset, he's far more valuable than Jason Garrison. Garrison will be a bad contract in 2-3 years, Kulikov will be an elite NHL defenseman.

Which is what Edmonton is looking for, defense. 2 good young d and a first.. Pretty good package.

Doesn't matter though, I don't feel like arguing with you. If I said here is a deal that would probably not happen, you'd probably argue with me that it is the type of deal they'd like.
Edmonton actually has a solid pool of D prospects, although it still isn't a strength. However, drafting for need at #1 is beyond lunacy.
We were rumoured to trade for Ovechkin (Well, for #1) and the price was reportedly insane. Yakupov isn't that calibre, but he isn't that far off. He'll be an elite Forward in the NHL within two years. As good as Kulikov is, a prospective Top paring D, a 1st round pick in a draft not so highly regarded and a 1st round prospect 5 years removed from being drafted won't get you Yakupov.
You seem to think i argue you with you for the sake of it? How sweet.

And yet, we did it twice: JayBo and Horton. Which proves your point.

We didn't draft either for need, we drafted them based on thinking they were BPA. As bad as our scouts were, i can't fault for them taking Bouwmeester, who was the concensus BPA going into the draft.
Either way, talents like Yakupov are difficult to acquire.

When JayBo was drafted, we'd been desperate for a stud offensive/two way defenseman for a long time. He was BPA especially earlier that season, and at draft aswell, although his star had declined a bit. I suppose our need and BPA just happened to coincide.
When we drafted Horton, we'd been desperate for a power forward for quite a while. Horton was not at all a concensus BPA, and therefore clearly drafted for need.
Anyways, my comment was more of a joke than anything else.
Out of those 9 goals, how many was on the ice for????
Garrison missed games 4 5 and 6. Florida scored 8 PP goals in games 1, 2, 3 and 7. Garrison was on the ice for 4 of those goals of which he scored one and had a secondary assist on two for a total of 3 PP points (his only points of the series).

So to me, he played a role in 4 goals. We all know they have to defend differently when he's on.

Reading between the lines, tallon seemed much more excited to bring Sammy back than Wolski. When talking about Wolski he was like" well skill is hard to find, but we'll have to see what happens during the summer", something like that. He said Kuli and Ellerby are important pieces to our future. But unless they plan to pay Strachan his NHL salary in the AHL, I don't see how Ellerby is not traded over the summer unless they trade someone else. Jovo isn't going to retire yet. We can't go with 8 d-men, we have too many forwards.
Tallon basically said Markstrom will be a Panther next season, in so many words. He said 'Clemmer is a true pro and I resepct him for how he handled himself this season. We'll have tough decisions to make.' About Markstrom he basically said 'He's been stellar down the stretch and in the playoffs, and since working himself back from his injury has shown what he can do at the AHL level. I have no doubt in my mind that this kid's going to be a great goalie in the NHL'. Then Fialkov said "but you don't want him sitting behind Theodore" and Tallon responded "no, but we have plenty of time to figure that out". That seemed to hint to me that he thinks Marky could even steal the #1 job from Theo out of camp. Again, all this was indirect and he didn't come out and say anything flat out, but reading between the lines that's how I interpreted everything.

Or, it could mean that he's not sure Marky will play in the NHL next season, so plenty of time. I don't believe he has made up his mind yet. Nor should he have. A lot of things can change by July and then camp.
But I'll let you and AG do the between the lines reading for me. I just write what I think would be good for us, I don't read through Tallons comments that much. Not my cup of tea. Like my own thoughts better. So, I'll let you guys do that, and I enjoy reading your take on these. However, like AG said, sometimes you see what you want to see.

lol well said Tuco.
Barring further or re injury, No way Markstrom plays another year in the AHL. Itll be Markstrom / theo.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Horton might not have panned out as the 3rd best player from that draft but keep in mind the 2003 draft class is likely to end up one of the best of all time.
As far as I remember it - and my memory might be hazy as it's been almost 10 years since that draft - Horton very much was considered the 3rd best prospect on the board, and if not it was a tossup after Fleury and Staal were taken. The only prospects I remember giving Horton a run for his money at #3 were Zherdev and Vanek for their balls out offensive upside, Michalek for his two-way game, and Suter as an all around defenseman. Not to mention Horton was considered the most phyically ready of the bunch at almost six foor three inches and two-hundred some pounds.
Again, going into the draft Horton and the others mentioned abouve were a tossup for BPA at #3. 10 years later I would have rather the Panthers taken, say, Getzlaf of course but he wasn't picked up until #19. Don't let actual results blind you to what the consensus was going into the draft.
Further edit: Again, if memory serves, Horton was a tossup for the #1 spot between Staal and Fleury. It just so happened that the Pens needed a starting goalie and the Canes needed a top line center. I think you're off with assuming that Horton wasn't BPA. We were all very happy at the time Keenan picked him up.

Players like Versteeg are valuable, but definitely not irreplaceable. If we can't find anyone better, than of coarse we have to bring him back, probably at a rediculous price. But Garrison is definitely more important than him IMO.

We had the number one pick each of those years that Dudley traded away for options and whatnot, and received number three, after making sure he would get the player he wanted at #3. So both Bouw and Horton were essentially number one picks. Horton was one of the best, but not a clear-cut number one. My point was we were desperate for a power forward, and chose Horton based on that need. Never said I wasn't happy with the choice, just that I think this was the decisive motivation for the choice.

Except that we have many good d-men and very few scorers.
