Petri Vehanen close to signing to NHL

According to Finnish newspapeer Ilta-Sanomat, goalie Petri Vehanen has received offers from two NHL teams, one of which is Boston Bruins. Vehanen is a 34-year-old goalie who was Team Finland's #1 goalie in last years World Championship. He was chosen as the best goalie in the KHL in 2010/11.

Probably means thomas is gone. Why would he come to NA to play a likely back up role ? Dont know if thats in the Finnish article or not

I can think of a long list of teams that the other team might be...

Is he capable of being a #1 or would he be a backup?

Off the top of my head:

Lighting
Leafs
Flyers
Penguins
Wings
Canucks
Wild

I can just see a lot of teams trying to snag him...

He is certainly capable of being a #1 if he adapts well to the North American style. But the skills are there, he has showed that in SM-liiga, KHL and in the Worlds too.

Actually they are just interested in Vehanen. No offers etc.

And Im pretty sure that he isnt interested in backup positions. Fair change to play at number 1 or no deal. He's 34 already no point to come sit at bench.

Fickle HF logic. One bad series and we've given up on our goaltending.

Yep, if one of them is Boston, Thomas or Rask is likely gone, much more likely Thomas. Don't see why they'd get another backup if Khubodin could be the backup to Rask/3rd string.

Risto Dufva, the head coach of Lukko, which is the team that Vehanen signed a five-year contract to starting next season, was interviewed in Finnish TV about Vehanen's situation and between the lines could be read that he is really going.

He said "What man's got to do, man's got to do" about Vehanen's leaving. So that basically tells it. Great goalie for whomever gets him.

I'm assuming he's not looking for backup duties, and it's been heavily "speculated" that we're unhappy with Fleury.

Could be an interesting roll of the dice for Tampa.

Any goaltending discussion has to include Columbus. They have only 2 under contract going into next year and one of those is Steve Mason who is either bought out, demoted or at worst (for us fans) kept in CBus as the backup.

No clue about the goalie in this thread but if he's aavailabe, interested and able to be signed I would think Columbus at least has a conversation with him....

34 y/o Vehanen a Finn and Rask a 25 y/o Finn. I could easily see Boston having these two split time next year. Meanwhile shipping out Thomas for a top6 player.

I'd sense that we'd be looking to give him around 30 games a year though to take the load off Fleury. Could work, what's he play like?

What kind of top 6 player? I mean yes the guy is the best goalie in the NHL but he is also 38 he will be 39 before next years playoffs thats gotta be taken into account

He positions himself perfectly, so there are almost never any flashy looking saves. He's just always there. If I'd have to use one word to describe him I'd say methodical.

I'd be happy for him of course, but as a Lukko fan this would just murder our chances next year. With Vehanen Lukko would be a top contender in Finnish league, without him, middle of the pack.

A great goalie and a genuine, humble human being.

If he's looking for a backup gig, the Jets could be one of the teams.

Chris Mason basically admitted he's not coming back if he gets so little playing time again.

You need to also remember that it's not like he's been a regular NHL starting goalie throughout his career. He may have a little more life in him than most goalies his age because he hasn't had to carry his team as long as others. But as you said for one of the best goalies out there a gm that has the team to compete or believes he has such a team won't care about down the road if he thinks TT would allow them to win now.

If Tampa is interested it would be dicey. He hasn't played in NA before so that's a cautioning tale but he has put up good numbers over his years in some of Europe's top leagues.
