As a head coach, I completely agree. But as a dmen coach, he is very good. Look at the progress of LA's young defensemen. Also, Coburn arguably had his best season when Murray was an assistant. He even made Randy Jones look competent.

The pool of defensemen to choose from is pretty underwhelming, but I think going after Alexander Sulzer would be a shrewd move on Homer's part. He'll be 28 at the end of the month and played really well for the Sabres, where he was given top-4 minutes, after coming over in the Cody Hodgson trade. I was at the Caps/Sabres game in DC at the end of March and Sulzer's play caught my eye; he didn't record any points, but he moved the puck well, made sound defensive plays, was physical... everything. Checking Sulzer's stats, he put up good offensive numbers in the minors. For that reason I don't think his 3 goals and 5 assists in 15 games for the Sabres was a fluke, but more an indication that he's just starting to scratch the surface of what he can do in the NHL. Intriguing player with plenty of room for continued improvement. I also wouldn't mind taking a look at Filip Kuba, but he turns 36 next season, is coming off a great year, and will likely command a contract worth at least a $5M AAV.

As for the forwards on the market, I see plenty that I think would help this team. Among those at the top of my wish list: David Jones (big fan), Paul Gaustad, Jarret Stoll, Chris Kelly, Daniel Winnik, Tanner Glass. Sleeper: Scott Parse (put up 11 goals and 13 assists in 59 games for the Kings in '09-10 but has played in just 14 games the past two seasons due to hip injuries).

Thoughts? Comments? Criticisms?
Also, I think we should really look at Prust as well. Would be a great 4th line winger who can hit, put up some points, fight and kill penalties. He can also mix **** up.

^^ Yeah, I like Prust a lot and would love to have him on this team. As for Suter... I don't think we're going to sign him. Just my personal opinion, though.

But we can't just sit around with what we have. We do need to go out and get a great D-man to help fix things. One that isn't that old either and cast be here for a good many years. Suter fits the bill best. The only other person I can think of is Garrison, who would be awesome to grab as well.

Curious, if we traded Gus, Bob, Carle's rights and our 1st, how high do you think we would go in the draft?

I'm also a big David Jones fan, though it'd probably be hard to fit his cap hit. Other than him, I'd be interested in getting Kelly, Prust, Wellwood, Stapleton, Nichol and Brodziak.

Is Schenn guaranteed that 3.110 million next year or can we use the same strategy to cut his salary again?

If the cap goes up and we do have the room, there would be no reason to cut him for a game.

For a player who is in the box for most of the season, there is always a chance/hope that Homer finally gets rid of him. That 1.1 is just eating space we dont have.

Let's wait and see, he might just fit fine, it's only $1.1m and he makes less than a million next year. For a 36-year old enforcer, I say keep him, he's surprisingly useful.

Um as he gets older, the worse it becomes, not the other way around. Honestly, his locker room presence isnt worth ONLY 1.1m (1.1 mill is HUGE btw. Its the difference between signing someone for 5.1 mil instead of 4 mil for example). Sestito and even Rinaldo who is pretty much useless will get nods over Shelly. Actually I dont know why you dont like Sestito. I know you love your goons, but Sestito can goon it up and atleast play some hockey. To be a good, you dont just need to go out there for a minute and fight.

You've mispelled "useless"

why not? it would give us more cap space to make a move when needed (trade deadline)

If there is a bonus cushoin next year his cap hit is significantly lower, the only reason it was 3.11 mil was because it was the last year in teh CBA and there was no bonus cushion. Same with Bob and JvR this year

The problem is finding a place to fit him. Honestly, if we were to somehow get him, I wouldn't mind trading Simmonds if it meant getting Oshie.
