If the Habs had an average Head amateur scout the Gainey/Gauthier era would look just as bad as the Houle/Tremblay era - probably even worse. Gainey/Gauthier gutted this team.

And just in case you're thinking of countering with well they brought Timmins in. They didn't. It was Andre Savard.
There's no way in hell that's true, I hate what Gainey and the Goat did to this team just as much as you do but come on! Houle and Tremblay set this team back for 10 years! Collectively they made some of the worst trades in franchise history and there's no way that this era is worse.

Yes you're right Gainey and the goat had Timmins but if you just look at the track record in trades Houle takes the cake hands down. Gainey made some awful moves but Houle destroyed the franchise.

If there is someone to blame, that's him ! He was scared by Serge Savard who wanted his President's job, and in thee same day, fire both him and Jacques Demers.... And replace them by 3 guys with no NHL GM and coaching experience: Houle, Tremblay and Cournoyer. And we all know the rest... He started the domino effect that we can still feel today.
Oh for sure he shares alot of the blame too for that era. A good president would have sat Roy, Houle and Tremblay down and talked it out not make a knee jerk trade that set the team back for a decade.

So we are basically down to Crawford, Hartley, or a minor league coach (Roy, Groulx, Gallant, Vincent, Jodoin)

I just don't see MB going with an Ex-Habs coach...i see him going off the board...

@FriedgeHNIC: Quenneville: wants to put to bed speculation about going anywhere else.

I'm beginning to think you're right. McGuire said Crawford was willing to take French emmersion this summer to prep for the job.

I think at this point it's between him and Lemaire, should he choose to consider the position.

I honestly can't understand why anyone would want Crawford over Hartley. Crawford left a Stanley Cup winning team to go and coach Dan Cloutier. Do you really want a coach that prefers to coach Dan Cloutier over Patrick Roy in his prime?

Then you add all the Moore / Bertuzzi drama that is going to unfold this year. It'll be the Habs Darkest Day v2.0

Whether people like it or not, it will soon go from "he has to be bilingual" to "we want a guy of chez-nous". Not saying it should be but I believe Bergevin will feel that pressure. Marinaro said that yesterday and I agree with him. It will come down between Therrien, Hartley and Roy.

Not talking about the language, but while Crawford has the experience...he doesn't have a great experience in the past 5 years. Do we go with experience even if it wasn't any good? Or we go with the unknown factor of what Therrien or Hartley brings HOPING it would be good? While they do have some experience.

I agree with you. This Moore/Bertuzzi cause is pending....while some don't like the distraction that Roy is causing, I'm pretty sure that this will be also a distraction. Besides, not being "pure laine", Crawford won't have the same breathing room than Roy could have. I don,t like that. I don't agree with that on a language point of view, but it is what it is. Bergevin needs some breathing room.
