Terrible goal by Bryzgalov, BUT also a really bad play by Timonen. And I actually don't think the backpass in general is terrible in and of itself, but when you've been teammates for a year and you know how badly someone handles the puck, you just don't throw it to him in a high-pressure situation.
Having said that, Bryzgalov's blunder still trumps Timonen's play by far. In law, you have something called a broken chain of causation, and I think this concept can be applied here. Sure, Timonen's play was bad, but ultimately you can't fault him for the goal, because what Bryz pulled off completely absolved him.
oh, look who popped in to blame Bryz. right on cue.
Bryz 50% blame
Timonen 50% blame
you guys do realize that Bryzgalov could've covered it, right? Timonen passed it back to him while he was under pressure and wanted him to cover the puck. it's a very common play. that was 100% Bryzgalov's fault. to say it's 50% Timonen's fault is hysterical. you're delusional.

He could have, certainly. He also could have played it behind his net, shot it to the boards opposite Clarkson. A billion things. Instead he shamed the team.

i'll add: IN THE PLAYOFFS, POSSIBLE ELIMINATION GAME.
agreed. thats why he gets 50% of the blame & Bryz gets 50% for not covering it.
@ blaming Timonen. This wasn't the first time a puck has been passed back to Bryz like that.
I disagree wholeheartedly with Garry Galley's commentary, too. Timonen didn't blindly throw the puck up the boards; I'd say that's a good decision. Bryz had plenty of time to do anything he wanted with that puck.

To clarify, I don't agree with the 50 - 50 split, and had you quoted the entire post, you would've seen why not.
no problem. we can disagree on the %. i'm not offended. but when a NHL defenseman blames Timonen [i'd say about 85%], me blaming him 50% doesn't seem so far fetched.

100% on bryz. That was insanely bad. Let's see how he recovers. But he also played the deflection terribly too. Should have been challenging the shooter more. Goalie 101, you know he's not passing it, so you challenger the shooter. Yes it was deflected and not an easy save, but if he challenges the shooter, pretty elementary.
