Wouldn't it be virtually impossible to manage to get an AHL team, NHL team and NBA team in one stadium?
I mean, it's sometimes hard enough with just two teams but if all three got to the play-offs....
Wouldn't happen here - the NHL has no interest in Brooklyn for anything more than the occasional pre-season game, and based on the way they configured the place, the feeling is mutual. Any AHL team that might come in here would be the secondary tenant to the Nets (though they might very well outdraw them )
Barclay's Center might be a decent AHL option if they can make the numbers work. It's already set up for hockey (though as 210 pointed out, it's not up to NHL numbers), and they could work around some of the seating issues as long as they're not looking to sell the place out.
I could see the Rangers putting their affiliate in there.
Man I would kill for any AHL team to play there. Would make it so much easier than traveling to CT.
I think it was between May 17-20 that Staples Center hosted 6 games with the Kings, Lakers and Clippers all in the playoffs. Can't imagine having to work on that stadium crew, must have been mayhem.
Barclays Center will also be off limits if the Islanders land there as it's being proposed, right now it's not designed to accommodate hockey....
Too funny. Islanders not going anywhere until lease is up then who knows where.... BC was not designed for hockey.

That is a lot of changing of stuff!!! Especially when they have 2 BBall games the same day.
Not to mention that MSG would probably prefer to not have an AHL team, as the profits that would come from that would almost assuredly be less than the profits that come from the one-off shows/events that it would be effectively replacing.

I don't think MSG would have the time to fit in 41 AHL games. Barclay's Center would definitely work, even the Colosseum would.

I think they could schedule it, but many of the weekend dates that are the life blood of the AHL would be taken up by the other MSG residents making difficult for the AHL team financially.

Color me crazy but I think the Barclays Center will be getting the same events as MSG. Why? Short distance which benefits the performers and such. Also I don't think many realize how many times a year on a weekend date that the Knicks and Rangers share the joint. It's not all so great. I'm sure most Ranger players could tell you the ice isn't so great from sharing a rink with an NBA team.
Isn't the Coliseum going to be destroyed when the lease is up which is why all I keep hearing about in state affairs are the islanders and that ancient arena?
Long answer: The Izod Center in East Rutherford and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn would be the only two viable locations that are not already occupied by another NHL team in the NYC metro area. However, I do not see an AHL team moving into the 19,040 seat capacity and poorly located Izod Center. Moreover, I doubt that the management of the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center would be interested in an AHL team when they'll be more concerned with filling those dates with more lucrative concerts and shows.
The next most viable arena would be the Sun Bank Trust Arena in Trenton, NJ, and that's stretching the definition of "metro area". That arena holds between 7-8k and has been home to an ECHL team for at least the last 10 years. After that, the choice of venue simply becomes nonviable. The largest arenas left, Mennen Arena, Codey Arena, and the Capital One Ice Vault all hold less than 2000 seats.
In my opinion, there are only two ways you'll ever see an AHL team in the New York City area, and both require the building of new arenas. In New York, the possible location would either be somewhere between Yonkers and White Plains, NY. I can't say I could ever see that happening, and I am unsure of the fan support in that area. The other option in New Jersey would be located around New Brunswick, and the only way I see that happening is if Rutgers University decides to go NCAA D1.
What about Continental Airlines Arena, that would be big enough for an AHL team there.
the IZOD Center is not an AHL facility, the Fordham basketball team has taken over the facility and I suspect the ice plant was likely removed when the Prudential Center opened; besides NJ HAD investigated that option before Albany became available, IZOD is expected to be downsized and largely goes into history now w/ Barclays Center opening in Brooklyn.... especially now w/ METLIFE Stadium across the way....

I could be wrong, but my understanding of mobile ice shows is that they bring their own ice plant with them so the ice is consistant for the skaters at each venue. They lay pipes on top of the concrete floor in the arena. They also bring the special effects like fog machines and extra lighting. Their ice is always smaller than the 200' x 85' standard NA rink. It would fit the info of the ice plant being removed from Izod.

There will be no AHL team in the NYC metro area because no arena and too much NHL competition.
