It's always good to have friends in Florida. The #mnwild welcomes @OrlandoHockey Solar Bears as the club's ECHL affiliate this season.

I bet the Aeros asked to the AHL they desperately needed an ECHL affiliate team after all the injuries this season.

Orlando Solar Bears partners Jason Siegel, Joe Haleski and Bob Ohrablo joined Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to welcome the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild and the AHL Houston Aeros as affiliates for the Solar Bears as they begin their Out of Hibernation season in October 2012. The announcement was made at RDV Ice Den, the official training and practice site of the Orlando Solar Bears.

If they get maybe 40 more levels of affiliates, I might be able to qualify for a team.

What is the point of this again? Is this gonna be the Aeros minor league team now or something?

Nice to see the Solar Bears back - I remember when they were a force in the old IHL.

It's a similar relationship as the Wild have to the Aeros. There's the occasional skater (like Burrows) who plays for the ECHL for a while to get ice time, and ends up making it to the NHL. Also, it's common for teams with a lot of goalie prospects to put one in the ECHL (like Kuemper was, although he had to be loaned to Ontario because we didn't have an affiliate).

Nah, SM-Liiga seems like a likely option. Koivu will play in TPS, Bäckström in Kärpät, Granlund in HIFK and so on.

Hopefully we can pick up someone for Espoo Blues.

I doubt it. I'm sure most of them will go play in Europe and Russia.

Some of these minor league or affiliate teams have some very very ****ed up names.

The Orlando Solar Bears? Just doesn't sound like a hockey team.

They were an IHL team until that league folded. Unlike others (like the Houston Aeros) they were simply shut down instead of being brought into the AHL because the owner of the team owned other IHL franchises, and could only bring one in.

They were granted an ECHL expansion team and next season will be their first. Hopefully they'll be able to establish a rivalry with the Florida Everblades.

Actually, some choose the lower North American leagues instead of going to Europe, so it could happen. I remember D. Hatcher and Chelios playing in an ECHL type league during the last lockout, and I'm sure there were others.

Considering neither side has filed to end the existing CBA, and they only have 9 more days to do it, you should change that to "I'm not worrying about a lockout until one side or the other files for the ending of the existing CBA."

So there could be essentially a franchise named "Moorhead Trolls" and nobody would blink twice?

Would anyone else like to see the Solar Bears sport the same colors as the Wild?

I think the logo would look nice that way.

Absolutely not. They're keeping their tradition and that's how it should be.

Nah, no one will ever put a team of even marginal importance in Moorhead because ****ing Fargo is right across the river.

**** Fargo.

Having lived in Fargo the last two years. I agree. This place sucks. I'm glad I'm done and never have to come back.
