Shootout Specialist or Enforcer?

Erik Christensen is a UFA which got me wondering if fans would generally prefer a 4th line shootout specialist over an enforcer that plays limited minutes a game?

Enforcer. I'd rather have somebody that will pay back players on the other teams than a shootout specialist. This is basically saying Colton Orr or Erik Christensen...Colton Orr. Don't care how little he plays. If we need somebody to go out there and just **** **** up for a shift then he's the guy.

I want a forward that can play defense. I don't care what else they can do.

Ideally your shootout specialist should already be in your top 6. If he isn't than your team is not going to go very far anyways.

Pretty much. If it turns out we can land a Matt Hendricks type I won't complain though. When did he pick up those moves? On a fourth line I like to have players who can take on bigger roles if needed, who can play 8-10 minutes one game, and then step up and play 13-15 minutes the next game if an injury or game misconduct or something else occurs. That goes for all three positions on that line. That might not be feasible with a cap system, but I'd like for the Flyers to at least aim at that. Right now we'd have something like Wellwood-Talbot-Rinaldo (with guys like Holmstrom, Zolnierczyk and Sestito challenging for a spot) if we only re-sign our RFA's. That's not too shabby, even if it can be better.

If Jagr isn't brought back, I wouldn't mind us signing Gaustad (unless his wage demands is something absolutely ridiculous). Not that novel an idea, I know... A Wellwood-Gaustad-Talbot line would be a damn solid 4th line.

Neither, but if I had to choose I would choose the one that can help me win hockey games (shootout specialist).

Enforcers are an endangered species. Having a guy on your roster who is more likely to play under 7 minutes than not is a waste of time and detriment to the team.

Enforcers are dead. Waste of money and roster space.

Both are pointless in the playoffs. We have the talent to get to the playoffs. I think we need more depth and health bodies on defense.

Briere and Giroux are fine in shootouts. Wouldn't mind Couturier getting a few cracks next year. Great shot, great hands, I think he'd be successful. But it's more important to sign a forward that can, you know, contribute in the first 60-65 minutes. Don't need a skills comp specialist. And by enforcer I hope you don't mean Jody Shelly V.2. Need a guy that can play hockey first, fight second.

Never the enforcer. Enforcers don't win hockey games or matter. The shootout specialist could make a real difference, though.

Neither really, but since we only have two options... shootout specialist. As mentioned above a faceoff specialist would be best.

Enforcers are being replaced in the game...if you're only skill is fighting, there isn't usually room for that liability. Tough guys with skill are going to become the newer thing, even just defensively strong...the goon will be gone soon imo.

To speak in hockey card language:

Enforcer - got 'em
Shootout specialist - need 'em

Either way we have Shelley under contract and so there's no need for another enforcer, shootout specialist it is.

So no need to acquire a new one, but let's keep the one we have for his last year.

id rather have a guy on the 4th line that can play. someone that can contribute instead of someone who can only take stupid penaties and get punched in the face and play 4 minutes a night for 1.1 million.
shootout specialist, faceoff specialist or whatever>>>>>>>>>>>a 2 toed sloth who can only fight.

besides having a clown like Shelley in the lineup prevents this team from rolling 4 lines. Something that many of us have been asking for and we finally got(when healthy)

If you're talking enforcer, I want game 5 Zac Rinaldo.
