I came to post a Hawks roster from around that time. It honestly doesn't get much better until well after the lockout in 06-07, and even then only because Keith/Seabrook were progressing and adding Havlat.
I started following the team after the lockout, so I dont remember much from the ABC line days. They were dark indeed.
Also, Pittsburgh and Chicago were in peak tanking form at the time as well.
If they Penguins were ever tanking, it certainly wasn't in 05-06. The salary cap allowed management to actually be active in the free agent market, and as a result they added higher-priced veterans such as Recchi, Gonchar, LeClair, Palffy, and Thibault, and some misguided publications had them making noise in the playoffs. Obviously that didn't happen and they still finished 29th, but it certainly wasn't a tank job.

Good post! People need to understand that sucking really bad is different from intentional failure. There are reasons to believe that some teams have played bad on purpose for a draft pick. That is tanking. But that does not mean that every team that was in the basement for a couple of years was trying to lose.
The Canadiens had some god awful teams in the early 2000's as mentioned previously. Personally, I started paying attention to the NHL in 2003-2004, and the worst team I witnessed is this one:

And i just thought of something... The Habs were pretty god awful this season. It's like my brain tried to avoid going there when I first wrote my post. I don't know if this season is worse than 2006-2007 was, even though the standings suggest so. I still feel the Canadiens' record is far worse than the team actually was on the ice.

Aaahhh, yes, the dark times between 1997 and 2008. (Except for one playoff year in between). As much as some Hawks fan complain, the little stretch now of being knocked out in the first round of the playoffs doesn't even remotely compare to the craptacular rosters from this time period. Now you see why there were 10,000 people or less in the United Center in those years....would YOU go to a game with a lineup like that???

Chicago has never tanked. Not even for a week. We just ****ing sucked and the owner refused to spend money on the team. Also, pretty much agree with Teemu. There were some other brutal teams, worse in some ways, but Amonte and Daze were still here so it's hard to compare to when they were gone.
2008-2009 Avalanche: The year of the snow blower. That was an all-around awful roster. A bunch of ageing players and no-names (roster already listed; page 2).
Full season? probably the 97-98 Hurricanes and even that wasn't bad compared to some of the crap rosters that have been posted so far.

Last season's roster was much worse than even this one. The 2006-07 team was nothing special of course, just very disappointing since fans really believed they were certain to make the playoffs. I blame the Ribeiro trade, Samsonov and Aebischer.

96-97 Kings is one of the worst for me by memory..im sure someone can top it considering the many many years of suck the Kings have created..lol
