I wouldn't hate Jackman if it was reasonable. Shultz would be a great signing but I'm not going to get my hopes up over that.
Honestly (if they can't sign Suter) I think Carle at fair deal might be our best bet. Carle has some terrible turnovers but if everyone is going to praise Grossmann for being great defensively you have to acknowledge that he's terrible with the puck. Teams need guys like Grossmann, and teams need guys like Carle.
Carle, Coburn, Meszaros, and Grossmann isn't the worst core to build around. Give it another year and see what our cap space can get us (it's pretty much the elephant in the room but I really think that despite/accounting for all the injuries and wear and tear Timonen's 6.3 coming off the books will be more of a blessing than a tragedy) and see where we are. Maybe Weber pulls a Parise and signs a one year deal and we can get him? Who knows but I'm kind of uncomfortable throwing the bank at Suter and then just seeing what happens.
Any chance of a European signing? Any possible names?
Joonas Järvinen, perhaps? Big and strong 23 year old finnish defenseman that is a good shot blocker. Reminds me a bit of Ossi Väänänen. Another option is Ilkka Heikkinen. He is not as good defensively as Jäärvinen but way better offensively. He has a hard shot and scored 18 goals for Växjö in SEL this season.

Yeah, I saw the rumor about Jarvinen to Nashville, so I figured he could be a possibility. Maybe he can come over with Hovinen.
Schultz shouldn't be in this poll, he's outside the NHL and is "only" a prospect. If we're able to sign him he has to fight for a roster spot like any other prospect (Bourdon, Gustafsson, Manning ...).
I would take a look at Colaiacovo as #6 for around $2.0MM, the 20 games he is injured some prospects are able to play.
would be the guys i choose from this list. some guys mentioned jackman, got a story about that guy, from his days with the regina pats. i was buddies with this regina guy that had a cabin at our local beach. got to know the guy very well over the years. we were talking pats hockey one day, and he tells me his son boards barret jackman and mike sillinger in regina. so a few weeks later, he brings in this envelope then he pulls out an autographed color photo of jackman and sillinger wearing pats jerseys. so i put it on my dresser, next to my gordy howe, ray bourque, eric lindros autographed photos.
How about not signing a free agent and go via trade? Wondering what it'd take to get Lydman or Visnovsky from ANA? 2012-13 is the last season on both of them's contract.
How many teams are realistically in the hunt for Suter? Who could afford him? I am still not convinced Suter is a #1 Dman and wouldn't want the Flyers to spend the money on him and him being a glorified Carle, IF Pronger came back I wouldn't be opposed to getting Suter

Unfortunately that rumor is true.
He seems like an intriguing prospect, especially since he's good enough to appear internationally and is still young.

Why would Garrison be a waste of money?
Is it because you haven't really heard of him or something?
He's responsible defensively and trusted to play against the best competition (the underlying advanced statistics prove it).
In fact, I've seen cases made for him being one of the better defensive defensemen in the league.
In addition to that, he has a cannon for a shot and would be a great option on one of the better power plays in the league (Giroux to Garrison, anyone?).
Even if his point totals don't really blow you away (the goal total should stand out, but the overall point total isn't amazing), keep in mind that Florida was one of the lowest scoring teams in the league.
Yes, unfortunately he's yet another lefty, but I think he could be really valuable after Kimmo hangs them up because he brings a lot of the same things.
It's not like he's Leino, who was ridiculously protected and in a perfect situation.
Garrison can actually play and is one of my most coveted free agents this summer.
I would choose Shultz as my numbers one behind Suter, he's a RH shot which the flyers won't have once they don't resign kubina, young, and affordable, after him I would go with garrison, who I always thought was pretty good while playing with a crappy Florida team (until this year) and he's only 27 as well.
Justin Schultz <----- Have no idea about this guy, will he convert to NHL well?
Dennis Wideman <---- Terrible at Defence, if you hate Carle for this reason, Wideman will drive you nuts!
Jason Garrison <---- He will be resigned in FLA
Matt Carle <---- This list is her because we want to upgrade on him
Brad Stuart <---- 32, obviously not a long term solution, but he has some all-around skill in a secondary role, not sure but I'm sure Detroit still need him.
Barret Jackman <---- will resign in STL
Sheldon Souray <---- Can only use on the PP, STAY AWAY
Bryce Salvador <---- AGE 36, NUFF SAID
Bryan Allen <---- Would be nice physical D-man
Milan Jurcina <---- defensive version of Zherdev
Hal Gill <---- OLLLLD
Greg Zanon <----- Will resign in BOS
Filip Kuba <---- Would be an option, but he's 35...
Joe Corvo <---- matt carle when he's older..
Unless you want to gamble on Wideman, I would stay with Carle and the bit of defensive prowess he does have.

I have seen Shultz play in person twice I think he could be a solid pickup and better down the road then the other out here listed
That's very encouraging. I wonder what kind of contract he would command?
He can only receive the max entry level contract and since all 29 other teams will offer him that, the flyers would have to convince him to choose philly over them

Hmmm, he's very doubtful then. I would stick with Carle.
