I didn't know that.. dang, thats pretty interesting.. I would have assumed a 6-7th seed has won it, I knew that an 8th seed has never..
OT: Maybe a more challenging question, how many times has an 8th seed team gone to the SCF and the WCF and ECF?
Rangers have 3 of their 4 cups before World War II ended and there was what, six teams in the league? I'd say it'd be pretty special to that franchise, it would establish them a bit more as a succesful franchise in more modern times.
not to mention that this team is a complete contrast to the futile teams put on the ice from 98 to the lockout.

Since the current format was adopted in 1994, the only 8th seed to appear in a Western conference (before LA this year) and Stanley Cup Finals is the Edmonton Oilers in 2006. Montreal appeared in the ECF in 2010. Numerous 7th seeds have made the Stanley Cup Finals and none have won the Stanley Cup:
1994 - Vancouver
1999 - Buffalo
2003 - Anaheim
2010 - Philadelphia

Edmonton (2006), Montreal (2010) and LA (2012) are the ones that come to mind for me of 8th seeds who made it to the final 4. I'm sure there has to be more.
New jersey wouldn't be that special. Yeah they are the 6 seed, but they had 102 points in the regular season, Good enough to win two other divisions and tie with Boston in a third division (lose on tiebreak). Is anyone surprised that they are where they are at, or be surprised if they win it all? It more speaks to how incredible the Atlantic division was than being special winning as the 6 seed.
Hate to go off topic, but does anyone else get annoyed when someone ends a thread with "discuss"? Shouldn't we be the judges of what's worthy of discussion?
BTW, if the Rangers beat the Devils and then the Kings, would it be the first time a team faced all of the lowest seeds in their own conference (6,7,8) and the lowest seed in the other conference (8) to win the cup?
