The worst would have to be the 1998 Canucks ... It was basically Bure, a bunch of over-the-hill veterans who did nothing, and a bunch of young prospects who did nothing. On top of that, they allowed the most goals in the league that year.
That year, the Canucks had a whopping two 20-goal scorers. Bure, who had 51, and Messier, who had 22.
That was a painful season to watch. Well, the entire Messier/Keenan era was painful to watch.
Since the lockout... Probably the 2008-09 New York Rangers.
Markus Naslund - Scott Gomez - Nikolai Zherdev
Lauri Korpikoski - Chris Drury - Ryan Callahan
Petr Prucha - Brandon Dubinsky - Nigel Dawes
Fredrik Sjostrom - Blair Betts - Colton Orr
Dan Fritsche, Patrick Rissmiller, Aaron Voros
Wade Redden - Michal Rozsival
Marc Staal - Paul Mara
Dan Girardi - Dmitri Kalinin
Henrik Lundqvist
Steve Valiqeutte
They actually started 7-0... but god damn they had no offensive punch. I remember after they went up 3-1 on Washington in the Quarters and then didn't even watch Game 7 because their effort in Games 5 and 6 was so freakin sad.
Best goal scorer: Martin Rucinsky with 17 goals
Most pts: Saku Koivu with 44 pts
Jeff Hackett was the goalie.
That is pretty god awful.
Not counting the Nords days, gotta go with the second half 2011 Avs. I believe they went over 2 months without a regulation win. 9-1 home loss to the Flames on St. Valentines day.
Since the lockout... Probably the 2008-09 New York Rangers.

The worst I witnessed was 03-04 after the firesale.
I remember Mike Green (Not the WSH one) ,Josh Green, Jozef Balej, and a bunch of other no names. Man was that painful.
I should say that I don't remember this season, as I was 7 years old, but the 1989-90 Flyers team looks atrocious. From what I can piece together from the stats, they got rid of Brian Propp, Dave Poulin, and Jay Wells, and Hextall had a combination of contract holdout, suspension, and injuries, so the team at the end of the season looks something like this:
Murray Craven-Mike Bullard-Rick Tocchet
Pelle Eklund-Ron Sutter-Tim Kerr
Brian Propp-Keith Acton-Ilkka Sinisalo
Craig Berube-Ken Linseman-Scott Mellanby
Tony Horacek, Derrick Smith
The only thing i can see as a positive is offensive depth. The rest looks like a bunch of has-beens, with a few never-weres mixed in. That had to be one of the oldest teams in the league. I also have never seen such a crap group of centers on the Flyers at one time. Without Poulin, that position is a wasteland.
This really isn't that bad...in fact there were 7 players with 20 or more goals, 3 more players in double figures and a HoF defenseman and Samuelsson was pretty good.....although it looks like the defensive depth is what did them in.
Still there are far worse teams than this one..I mean, 14 points from 1st place in the division and 2 points from a playoff spot?
I've been watching since '07-'08 so I'm going with the '08-'09 Rangers... That team was ****ing terrible. Pretty much the entire team was negative on their +/-. Henrik nearly single handedly stole a first round series win from the 300 goal behemoth Washington Capitals. Yet people still labled him a playoff choker.
Gomez... Drury... Kalinin... Voros.... REDDEN... so many terrible players. Drury was OK at best that year, but jesus that team was sooo terrible. The '09-'10 Rangers deserved to go to the playoffs so much more than the '08-'09 team.
Since the lockout... Probably the 2008-09 New York Rangers.

They actually started 7-1. I went to the San Jose game that ended the streak. They quickly took a 2-0 lead and proceeded to allow 7 of 8 goals. That team was worse than the 09-10 team missed the playoffs.
Edit: The team that started 7-1 was the 09-10 team.

My goodness, just awful in every way. Terrible. Easy to see how Edmonton snagged the #1 pick last season. That said, didn't this lineup beat the Canucks in two games at the end of the season?
