If you could steal one player off the Capitals roster, who would it be?

I cannot believe it took 6 responses until someone said Ovechkin. It is absolutely not even a discussion, he is one of the best players in the NHL. The most dynamic player every time he was on the ice during this series, teams account for him and he changes the game.

ovechkin...just him alone and how much he lays it all out there everytime he is on the ice would open our offense and give torts the option of creating a more offensive style system

I just don't see Ovi as someone who would mesh well with the team chemistry. He has a huge ego and loves being the center of attention. We've had our years of buying players like that, and how'd it work out? I also don't see him getting along with Torts at all, and I just can't see him becoming tight with the team itself inside the locker room. So having that said, I'd take Chimera in a heartbeat. He's the only cap that actually impressed me this series.

Personally Backstrom.

I love Ovi(Not for the last 2 weeks), but as IAMREALITY said, he wouldn't go well with Tortorella.

well since our biggest weakness if generating offense you have to go with Ovechkin

Besides Ovi, I would probably take Backstrom or Carlson

Let's visit hypothetical land. If you were any NHL GM and were presented this same scenario, and you didn't pick Ovechkin, you'd be fired before you could even begin your reasoning.

Semin is a goal scorer, nasty shot. We just need more of that. I think. Maybe Semin needs Torts to become the complete player...

Yeah no way Semin would work here.

He isn't physical(unlike Ovi), he doesn't play defense that well. Wildly inconsistent in terms of production and effort.

Torts wouldn't stand him.

Backstrom would probably be the most Torts like player despite his lack of physicality. Very solid defensively and very dangerous in the O zone consistently.

Ovechkin is not a pure sniper. He's like a power forward who can snipe and dangle. He's the whole package. It's Ovechkin for me as well. We have depth at center, we need a scoring LW. This is Ovy.

I also feel like over the last two seasons Ovy's become more of a team player. You can tell the man wants to win so badly and he really has performed great in the playoffs, when it counts. I would welcome him to this team with open arms.

how can you not say ovi? we're a team that doesn't have a great offensive game. ovi has a shot, he can qb. the guy is a workhorse. he's physical. sure his defensive game needs work, but ovi/richards/gaborik wouldn't be possible to stop. we'd have arguably the best offensive line in the league. even kreider/stepan/ovi would work.

i don't see how people can argue taking a defenseman over a SIXTY(!65!) FIVE goal scorer.

ovi may not have shown up the past few years, but a change of scenery could bring back that 50+ yearly goal scorer.

he draws enough attention that you can't ignore him, and if richards and gaborik had space you can't shut them down either.

not even arguable. ovi all the way.

Backstrom. He's the most effective player on their team.

Ovechkin is one of the most overrated players in NHL history. All the physical ability and talent in the world, but he's just not very smart. He tries to do one of the same two things virtually every time he has the puck, which makes him much easier to neutralize than he should be. Incredibly inefficient player who wastes tons of offensive zone opportunities for every goal he actually scores. Sure, he could score 50-60 goals, but he'll do so taking 100 more shots than any other player in the league.

Ovechkin does fill a need more than Backstrom, but you should strive to never feature dumb, inefficient players. If not Backstrom, then Carlson, Alzner, Chimera, or Laich.

Hmm. let me see. How many players on Wsh are 4 time 50 goal scorers and still only like 26 years old?

This is as close as a no brainer as it gets.

We were a different team then. Largely built around our one star, and in the end we failed because of that one dimensional plan. But we aren't a team with 'stars' anymore. But instead just a group of players that play as a team, live and die as a team, go to war as a team. Ovi has mad talent and could very well work out here. I just can't help thinking that it wouldn't be long before he fell out of favor with torts, and it would be all downhill from there.
