If you could steal one player off the Capitals roster, who would it be?

Ovechkin is one of the most overrated players in NHL history. All the physical ability and talent in the world, but he's just not very smart. He tries to do one of the same two things virtually every time he has the puck, which makes him much easier to neutralize than he should be. Incredibly inefficient player who wastes tons of offensive zone opportunities for every goal he actually scores. Sure, he could score 50-60 goals, but he'll do so taking 100 more shots than any other player in the league.

Ovechkin does fill a need more than Backstrom, but you should strive to never feature dumb, inefficient players. If not Backstrom, then Carlson, Alzner, Chimera, or Laich.
overrated? a multiple 50+ goal scorer and mvp is not overrated. and what a terrible problem to have, maybe the most dynamic offensive player in the league taking lots of shots. no way i want that guy on my team.

im much more nervous when backstrom is on the ice than ovechkin. ovechkin's moves have for the most part been figured out by top level defenseman (girardi) and hes not nearly as effective as he used to be. sure he still will get a fair amount of points but hes not near what he used to be. backstrom can create so much with subtle plays and plays that most players dont see happening. backstrom is also a reliable player and surprisingly physical.

Ovechkin by far. How is this even a discussion?

Because people are picking AO based on his past success. He hasn't been "that" player for the past 2 seasons.

IMO he is still the scariest player on the ice and requires the most defensive attention. The guy is a freak!

He hasn't been that player because he's been kept on a lease. What do you think, he can't put up those great numbers again if he was on another team? Time for Ovie to move on.

I don't know. I've watched a lot of him and I have been a huge fan of his since he came into the league and he has become very predictable. Do I think he has it in him to score 65 again? No way. 50 maybe but he needs to reinvent himself. He's also not moving to another team with his 9.5 million dollar cap hit.

Give me Ovi, and this really isn't even a discussion. I could understand the Backstrom picks, but still....it's definitely Ovechkin.

If Ovechkin is a one trick pony and overrated, what does that make Gaborik? The guy is 26 years old with over 300+ goals and 600 points and 30 goals in 50+ playoff games.
Overrated??

I'm gonna go with Carlson. It's ridiculous how much talent that team has on it.

the cup argument, imho, is the weakest possible argument ever made.

PPL said Kovalchuk was garbage...up till last year, he'd never win a damn thing. He's been a machine these playoffs, leading his team to the ECF.

Great players are great players. I'll take a great player who hasn't won over a role player (like say....Drury) who has won, every single day.

ovi is basically the only threat on washington right now. saying that he dropped in goals there doesn't say anything about what would happen here. we had 3 guys covering him all series and he still scored a couple. nobody else on that team is going to be able to do that.

predictable or not he's got a snipe, he's physical. guy basically takes control of the game. he's a selfish player, but he has earned the right to be. bordreau trying to force defense on him probably ruined his career-- though he looks like he's ready to start playing hockey again. he does not like the bench.

put him on a line with richards and gaborik and the amount of space there will be will be ridiculous. i don't have any doubt he'd break 50 right away. i don't care how much 'creativity' he has left. 3 superstars on a line there's going to be defense missing... not only that but we'd have a second line that can produce.

If you take anyone but Ovechkin you're absolutely out of your mind.

If i had to pick one guy to keep though.....it'd be Backstrom no doubt. There are certain players that will perform not only the regular season, but in the Playoffs where it counts. Nikki Backstrom showed me that he's that type of player (ala Brad Richards or Danny Briere). I'd take him since AO is basically AROD. You won't win BECAUSE of him....it'd be despite of him.
Yankees don't win in 09 without A-Rod.

In an NHL12 video game environment Ovie is the choice. Assuming this was a legitimate question where salary cap comes into play, Ovie would be pretty low down the list because of the albatross of a contract he has.

Carlson is a great choice if you are talking current roster.
The Russian kid who has not come over yet who as star of the World Juniors two years ago is my choice if I have an organizational pick (his name escapes me at the moment)
