Richards hired as Head Coach

Richards gets the gig.

The Blue Jackets have decided that coach Todd Richards is a keeper.

Richards, who took over when Scott Arniel was fired on Jan. 9, will have the “interim” tag lifted from his title later today, The Dispatch has learned. He has signed a two-year contract, the financial terms of which were not immediately available.

Richards Hired As Head Coach

I was a bit surprised to see this as a done deal already...

This had to be the strangest, not to mention most boring, coaching search ever. Did we even do a search?

At any rate, I just don't care. Truly. Might as well keep even more consistency after the worst year in team history. This is certainly a "non-conformist" franchise.

If this was the plan all along, fine, I truly didn't expect someone else to get it, but I truly wish we would have heard if other candidates were actually interviewed.

Of course, judging by what happened with Boucher during the last round of a coaching search, perhaps they managed to interview people without the media finding out or the organization decided against releasing any kind of press statement about it.

I think this seals that the organization has decided to move forward without Rick Nash. Its truly only a matter of time now. Any doubts I might have had about that are gone.

Good choice. We weren't going to do any better.

If we want to know what the CBJ will look like without Rick Nash, we need to look no further that a certain soccer stadium on I-71. No stars, no offense, no marketing buzz. Yes, we DO need to get our back-end in order before adding to the offense, but until the winning starts, there can be no viability without marketability.

My disdain is not for the selection of Todd Richards. It's for the appearance of there not being any serious search for a better candidate. It appears the job was just handed to him, like the C was to Rick Nash, the net was to Steve Mason, and so on and so on.

I'm pretty sure Priest has this hanging in his office somewhere.

I'm disappointed by the timing of this more than anything, and it's probably unfair. Has there been any information about potential other candidates, any interviews, etc.? I imaging the press conference to announce this will end with Howson saying "Now watch this drive".

If there was any other candidates that actually interviewed, I wouldn't necssarily be surprised that the Organization would want to keep it under wraps with what happened with both Boucher recently and Murray 5 years ago. Eventually, bits and pieces about the "search" will trickle out, assuming there actually were other candidates that interviewed.

I've heard/read/seen nothing about other candidates at all...

This was expected, the only facts I know about him is that he was fired by the Wild, was average with the Jackets, is around a .500 head coach overall and appears to be a very introverted person. I would have liked to read about a head coach search but there was none as far as I know; he is not appealing to me at all. I’m not confident he will be much better than most of the other coaches hired here but judging him before he’s been given enough time to prove himself is not fair.

I didn't want Noel hired here either but after seeing what he did in Winnipeg I wished he had been.

We will know by January or February if Howson made another mistake.

I suspect it would be from an agent. "My client was offered the head coaching job at Columbus and turned it down."

I figured this would probably happen.

So, where does that leave Brad Berry and Dan Hinote? Those were Arniel hirings, so will Richards clean house and hire guys he wants? I've got to think there are upgrades available, ie Haviland (if he doesn't get a HC offer).

I feel the same way. This is the only thing keeping me the slightest bit optimistic about the CBJ today.

#CBJ GM Scott Howson heard from 8-10 coaches interested in #CBJ job, but did not hold formal interviews.

The article I believe stated that Berry is going back to the college ranks.

This is the problem I have with the hire. I didn't want Richards, but I would have been at least okay with it if we had interviewed other coaches.

Can this go to the "Is this your lowest point as a fan" thread. They didn't even interview anyone. Comical if true.

No interviews. Wonderful. As to be expected.Heck if Priest and Howson can hold their jobs after what they have done, how could it be expected to be different with the HC. Way to take more drama out of the off season.
