Kings Almost Traded Dustin Brown

Bob McKenzie shared a few interesting tidbits today on his twitter account.

Quote:
Yes, Kings were "considering" a trade involving Brown. That is factually correct. Multiple teams, incl BUF, were interested.

When that became public, there was backlash on # of levels. Kings backed off, Brown took off. Rest, as they say, is history.
As the old saying goes, sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make.

I said it then and I stand by it now, trading Brown would've been a huge mistake. I'd have been done with the team if they pulled the trigger on any deal involving Brown.

Of course Brown was "available". The kings couldn't score and brown is a huge asset. Dean can thank the media for leaking the rumors for Brown's turnaround.

I don't think Dean was shopping Brown around the league, but I'm sure buffalo and Columbus were in the discussions.

Does brown go beast mode without the rumors? We will never know.

That said, jack was always the one I wanted traded. Great move by dean.

Theoreticals are thrown around by GM's all the time. It probably came up with the potential Nash deal and then while they were at it asked around for a comparison amongst other teams to test his value. I would do that too just because of simple mathematics and logic, you don't really know what values you are dealing with unless you compare them to others. Just dealing with one offer means you are guessing. Obviously glad it worked out the way it did, and I seriously doubt that Lombardi was considering it too seriously himself. If he was, given the state of things at the time, I would think he would have pulled the trigger.

Post trade deadline Dustin Brown is like a completely different player than the one they had from October through February. It's like they traded that underwhelming Brown and acquired Wendel Clark.

I don't doubt GMs asked about Brown, but my big question is if Dean shopped Brown.

Thank god, eh. I'm wondering how much of that was the Kings calling and floating it out there, rather than teams knowing how desperate we were and shooting for the moon.

Every player has a price, and it is doing his due diligence to see if there was an opportunity for Lombardi to make his team better. It worked out for all parties in the end. Brown stepped up when his team needed him most and the Kings got the player that they were hoping Brown would become. This is what most fans wanted to see from Brown, and it's coming in the most pivotal point of the hockey season.

The bigger question is if Brown should be the captain.

I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. I'm sure his name was brought up in discussions, but I highly doubt Lombardi would have moved him unless he was getting heaven and earth in return.

I remember hearing the select few teams Brown was shopped to was Boston,Toronto and Buffalo. Only names I recall in return were Luke Schenn and Matt Frattin from the leafs. I was open to trading Brown for the right price, glad it didn't happen. But make no mistake the Brown we're seeing in these playoffs is the best he's ever played so maybe those rumors were for the best and created this monster.

If he said "I wasn't in favor of trading Brown" it wouldn't have crossed my mind. But for someone to write such a strong statement as he did, he really had to have a VERY strong opinion back then, when even Brown's fans were saying "... if the price is right..." So yeah, I wanted to see what his argumentation was, because the strength of his statement surprised me - only to realize that it's only his memory playing tricks on him.

Justifying our decisions (opinions) after we know the outcome is something that we all do. We like to remember things differently, turning our indifferent opinions into "correct opinions" and our strong opinions into "I was certain about it." I work in an industry where making right decision means everything so I always write down my thought process and how strong my opinion is BEFORE I make the decision, not two weeks after, when I know how it turned out. I found out that my "after" justification differs from my "before" justification. Thank god for forum posts in this case. I wrote this second long part only to show, that it's not a knock against Reaper45, since mind tricks work the same on everyone.

I thought the rumor was that Brown came up in discussions about Nash. Not the DL was shopping him generally. You have to give to get.

You would think all of what you said would be obvious yet you still have to say it to people who don't seem to get it I guess. It goes for all trades, all players. A diligent GM, with indifference to you Scott Howson, always considers everything. Now he won't necessarily pull the trigger but he at least thinks about any deal near or in the ballpark.

Hehe. Now, the bigger question is if Brown should be the MVP.

All this is right now is poison. I sure hope Brown catches not a single word of this crap. It did its job near the trading deadline....to bring it up now would only lead to screw things up.

Nothing he said has any meaning or impact. The Kings should be considering a trade that includes Brown today, that is what their job is.

Brown has easily doubled his value this post season. Maybe even tripled it when you consider his contract.

Brown for Giroux
