I understand it's an older building, but does that negate the possibility of hanging some modern lighting? Seriously, the corners of the rink are shadowy and frightening!
I think MSG looks much better on TV since the renovations. I don't think its poorly lit but is does look different than some other rinks. That's not a bad thing. Over the last 20 years, alot of the buildings have become cookie cutter, but MSG still has some distinguishable traits.
It's a famous arena, but it's also a dump. Kinda similar to Joe Louis.
You know the entire lower bowl is just as nice as any other arena and that it's currently being renovated?

Completely agree coming from a Rangers fan. It is about time that they are renovating the place. It wont be such a sore eye after the next 2 years when they complete it.
Okay.. what does that have to do with anything? What you're talking about is a roof.
I'm not sure what your point is either then. I'm pretty sure what's above your head at the Prudential Center isn't deterring anything on the ice unlike the lighting issues at the Garden
I think the lighting is fine. What bothers me is how the camera is set up for TV viewers. I had the same issues with Florida's stadium during the first round. It makes you feel like watching from farther back.
The Rangers were an awful home team for the better part of the last decade. Funny how all this crap comes out now that they actually have a good team and win most of their home games.
thatd be a clever little observation if i had mentioned the coliseum prior to being called out for being an islander fan...but i didnt. Ranger fans here have agreed that the arena, prior to its ongoing renovations, has seats where your view is less than desirable. So bc the team i ROOT for plays at the coliseum, i must never go to other arenas...ever.
But hey, if you think im here to talk up the 40yr old, worst arena in hockey, thats cool.
I've been to plenty of games at Rogers arena and I finally got the chance to attend a game at MSG this year. I would certainly say the lighting at MSG provides a much better experience. It is like a broadway play as one poster mentioned. It is also easier to focus on what is going on on the ice than what is going on in the stands. there is no need to light up the stands.
This!
Not trying to be a homer here--there are plenty of things that could be renovated about MSG, but I like the lighting. It adds a fun, game night--big event atmosphere to it. I wouldn't change that tbh.
People can hate on MSG all they want and that is fair, but I love watching games there.
ETA: Frickin' cup holders would be nice! I always have to choose between a beer and clapping. You can probably guess what wins out, lol, but I shouldn't have to choose!
Itentionally done to make it harder for the opposing goaltender, that combined with intentionally keeping the ice terribad is the reason the Rangers have been so succesful this season, throw in the super secret advanced skates Dolan bought that allows them and them alone to overcome the bad ice at MSG and you wind up with being #1 in the EC.
slowclap
But you forgot the part about the lighting being intentionally dimmed to take the focus off of Lundqvist's illegal pads that NO ONE NOTICES EXCEPT FOR US SMART PEOPLESS!!1!

Then why do the stands fill half the picture? Not to mention that you don't see the ice very well either.
