Chicago-Pittsburgh

Chicago
Evgeni Malkin

Pittsburgh
Patrick Kane
Brandon Saad

Someone had the idea of a Kane for Malkin swap in the Kane thread. I'd like to see what Pens think of this deal. As a Hawks fan, I do not want to trade Kane. And, I wouldn't even trade Malkin but if they did, this is very good value. You get a young star playmaking winger and our best prospect who is also a local kid.

I would have to think that the OP knew the reaction when he posted. The value is that far off that he could not have been serious.

The value is perceived as perfect by everyone who doesn't post a counter as to what they think the value is.

Malkin, arguably the best player in the world, likes it in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh loves having Malkin. Two more years on his contract anyways. So where is the incentive to make a move? And even if there were, a high second as the difference? Make a serious offer and maybe I will bother to counter. But as it is, saying that the value is way off is all that I feel inclined to do.

It is all a silly exercize anyways, players like Malkin rarely get traded, and when they do the team trading them (usually much later in their careers than malkin is) always lose big time. In a cap world you could not construct a trade for a player like Malkin, Crosby or Stamkos that makes sense. But you could at least try and do better than this one.

The gap between Malkin and Kane is 10-fold greater than Saad.

I honestly don't know what return Chicago would be willing to give up for Malkin...in all seriousness...perhaps Toews+Kane? Just don't see anything like that happening.

On the top of the list I do not want Pens to do is trade away Malkin and trade for PKane, but if I could maybe squeeze them for Seabrook or something, I'd actually like the first idea better than this, because Kane is wasted on a center like Crosby or Malkin, they can do just about the same with any old serviceable winger with a third of the cap hit. Kane/Staal on the other hand has something to inspire some fantasy, because Staal is exactly the kind of big center to protect Kane and Kane is enough of a playmaking winger to pick up Staal's (comparatively to Malkin) slack there.

In summation: No Kane!!!

I wouldn't trade Toews alone for Malkin given their cap hits.

That is almost $13 million in salary. For the next two years then both likely will want a raise. How does that help the Pens again? Like I said, in a cap world, it is almost impossible to make a 'fair' trade. You can make a trade arguably fair in talent, but keeping them all if they turn out in skill is the issue.

Hence the "Just don't see it happening" part there champ.

Above offer...perhaps...getting close.

Counter:

Kane
Dylan Olson
Prospect (not named Saad, Morin, McNeil) or cap dump if needed

Just lock this thing, we're not taking a horrible cap dump in Martin and a UFA to be for Kane. We end up with nothing and trade the best player in the deal.

There is no way of trading for Kane that makes the Pens a better team. It's basically a completely useless idea to entertain.

You'd have to be living on Mars to not catch at least 10 Pens games a year. I don't like Niskanen and he isn't the kind of defender the Hawks need for the top 4.

If you would just have thought about the original deal from the Pens perspective you could have come to that conclusion half an hour ago and spared yourself some pain.

Like I said...Chicago is not willing to give up the assets needed to land Malkin.

Kane_Saad ain't gonna cut it.
