@News1130Sports sure was excited about that news, weren't they? Lol.

I think it's a mistake for us not to re-sign Garrison. He's gotten better every year, just learned how to use his shot, and is solid positionally.

Wherever he goes, he'll be popular, and good.

I wouldn't read too much into his comments. He said on a local Vancouver radio station that he would be thrilled playing for his hometown Canucks. He also said he wants to sign in Florida. The comments seem like a polite response to a question raised by Vancouver journalists. If he isn't signed by July 1st it could, of course, get more interesting.

Not really all that surprising. The guy is from the GVR and just looking for a spot close to home.

That being said. A 5 million payday for 1 good season seems excessive.

How Weaver doing?

I still want him back on the Canucks. Always thought he was under utilized on the PK.

I don't care that the Canucks got bounced in 5 games in the playoffs this year. That isn't them, they won back to back President's Trophies and went to the SCF last season. Yes they're an elite hockey team.

I'm not taking anything away from the Panthers, but the Canucks contend for the Stanley Cup every year, Garrison is from British Columbia, and it's not even speculation that he will go to Vancouver, he said it himself that the Canucks are on the top of his wish list. He also said he wants to stay in Florida, so we'll see.

I'm not a fan of either team, just adding my opinion.

Garrison is easily going to be worth the $4.5+ he's asking. He did very well in tough minutes, handled 5 minutes per night of special teams (half PP, half SH) PLUS 18.5 minutes of even strength... He's legit.

I don't think he'll hit 16 goals again next year; he had a ton of shots on net (which is good, that's far more repeatable than a high shooting percentage), but part of that is probably because he played 23:41 per night. If he goes somewhere with more depth on defense he's probably not going to see the same amount of minutes.

Please stop saying "1 good year". He was excellent defensively last season. If 2 years playing shutdown minutes and excelling at it is not enough then I don't know what is. The offense might be a bit of a question mark but that's about it.

He's very underrated, he's a very good defensive defenseman, but was exposed a bit in the playoffs. His size can be a hinderince, but I still love the guy.

WhatHaveYouDoneForMeLatelyMuch? They're on equal footing?
The Canucks have more playoff wins in the last 2 seasons than Florida has playoff games over the last 17 years. The last 4 seasons, Vancouver has finished 7th, 5th, 1st, 1st while Florida placed 14th, 28th, 28th, 14th.

If the Panthers had played the Kings in the first round, they wouldn't have won a single period. The Kings were the best team in the league going into the playoffs (essentially trading Jack Johnson for Jeff Carter and Slava Voynov)..
Quote:
They have outshot 13 straight opponents, a streak dating back to March 11. They outshot those opponents 451-302 and only lost two games in regulation during that span. And it wasn't a creampuff schedule -- 8 of those 13 opponents are headed to the playoffs.

An all-minutes, defensive rock d-man with size who also has a howitzer opposing teams would have to game plan on the PK is worth 5M to the Blues. Perfect Pietrangelo partner.

It sounds like he could be using this interview to get the process moving. Express interest in Vancouver by hinting/saying they'll be high on your list. Maybe he thinks that will bring the money up that Florida offered him. Maybe it's posturing for his contract?

He has some leverage on Florida only IF they want him back. If they feel they will be fine without him then they may not care about this

Why not say what side he plays? If I don't know what side Garrison plays I won't know what side Weaver & Campbell have played for you.

Panthers have a pretty sick D core now that I look at it.

Campbell - Overpaid, but a true #1.
Jovo - Overpaid, but stillplays very well.
Gudbranson- True emerging superstar.
Kulikov - Tons of potential.
Ellerby - Same as Kuli.
Weaver - Very under-rated Dman.

Garrison doesn't really need to be back.

This is why I like alot of Penguins fans. Objective, not trying to take potshots, and weighing in with your opinion as your opinion, not written law or scientific fact. We might not see eye to eye on everything, see the Staal for Edler and Booth for Michalek threads, but you're alright man.

As for the speculation...it's true of many B.C.ers. Guys like Ladd and Recchi and even Niedermayer (although I wasn't sure if he rooted for the Canucks, Flames or Oilers...he has roots in both provinces I thought) have said that it doesn't influence them, or even that they'd rather not play for a home town team, but I see no reason why not for Garrison. He'd be a fit here, and assuming Florida isn't interested in retaining his services, they have a solid defense corps without him and could probably use 4 million+ else where on their roster (who couldn't?). Then again, always fun to be part of a contender you contributed to building, so it should be fun to see how this rolls out.

Letting a good young defenceman walk for nothing seems like pretty poor asset management no matter how much depth you have.

He shoots left. Unfortunately for Vancouver fans, that means AV will likely stick him on the left side, where we have a logjam already unless someone is moved out.
