It's easy to forget how effective he was when played with Backstrom and Semin.

If he's your top 6 W, you're paying 4.5 million for a top 6 W who sucks at forechecking, working the boards, is below average at generating and average at finishing offensive plays, and is still worse than Troy Brouwer at working the net despite it being his bread and bakery. But at least he can glare at people and be good/canadian/boy. A capable filler top 6 W if put with great linemates, sure, but for 4.5 you want a bit more than that.

No matter where he is on the team he is significantly overpaid for what he brings.
If you're pissed about 41 points for $4.5 million...you must really be pissed about 54 points and $6.7 million.

As opposed to players who would struggle playing with Backstrom and Semin when they're on?

Chimera is a much better fit there anyway simply because he can win a race to the puck once in a while.

...and I can't even imagine the anger at 65 points for $9.5 million. (Just saying.)

I obviously agree with Halpysback though. Great post.

Not when the 54 point player in question has the intangibles to make up for it.

Semin and intangibles should not even be used in the same thought process.

Absolutely. Ovechkin needs to go way before Laich does. And all of them need to go way before Perreault. I mean, 30 points for 500k? That's gotta be where it's at!

No more absurd than Laich and the magical intangibles of being canadian.

Semin can actually carry the puck coast to coast and give Chimera or Perreault a layup while being triple teamed. I'd say that counts for something.

Thankfully we won't have to worry about it next year. I'm looking forward to watching him with Datsyuk more than I looked forward to him with anyone on the caps since Fedorov.

There are guys to be pissed about...I dont see Laich as one of them.
In the good ol' days of '09-'10 he scored 12 ES goals. Tied for 8th on the team for forwards. 8th. You'd think a 2nd liner would have better numbers than that.

When the team moved to a more defensive system last year he scored 11 ES goals.

This past season he scored 10 ES goals.

I'm sticking to my opinion. He's not nearly a strong enough offensive player to be a 2nd line winger.

Edit for clarity purposes. I put the faceoff information in there because I don't think he has the abilities to play anywhere on the 2nd line and at his cap hit he better be playing center on the 3rd line.

Backstrom gets suspended for a selfish cross check, Semin scores the game winner of the game he was suspended for with an absolutely sick snipe.

Semin has a game tying turnover in the offensive zone, Backstrom has a game losing turnover in the defensive zone.

Backstrom makes a great physical/hustle play on a goal against Anisimov, Semin makes great physical/hustle play on the game 6 game winner.

End result: ZOMG BACKSTROM IS BACK, REDEMPTION, PLAYOFF BEAST, BEST PLAYER EVER, WOW SEMIN IS LAZY, NOT ONE GOOD PLAY ALL PLAYOFFS, KILL HIM WITH FIRE.

I wish I was exaggerating.

I bet people even forgot that he was the only one performing under Hunter for the longest stretch of time this year.

Has anyone had the desire or want to review game 7 yet? I haven't however if and when someone does can they look at the off sides that were called on us? For some reason I've had recurring flashbacks of two or three that I thought were questionable. Also an interference non call in the offensive zone seems to be niggling at me.

Just subtle things that the linesmen and refs have the power to skew.

Dollars to Donuts New Jersey and Phoenix will not get those borderline calls to their favour.

May change my name from Dream Big to the Big Cynical.
