Ray Emery

Given the uncertainty with Crawford and the overall suckage of Emery (strictly IMO, most analysts and fans think he was very good this year), Bowman made a mistake resigning Emery. The Hawks need to do something with the goaltending position. What can they get for Emery?

A bag of pucks.

Seriously, probably a low draft pick or a lousy prospect.

Good to have confirmation from other fans this guy actually is a bottom 5 goalie in the NHL at best, not just bias by me.

Because Emery is better than a lot of the options out there. Why do you think Bowman signed him so fast?

His cap hit is going to be $1.15 million in 2012-13, pretty steep for an iffy backup, and almost double his $600K cap hit in 2011-12. I don't think there will be any interest at all.

Still one of the best backups in the league though. Why do you say he is iffy? Please elaborate.

I never thought he was very good. Back when he was with the Sens and they had stud team, he was the only thing that kept them from winning a Cup.

For the money? That's iffy performance per dollar investment.

There might be some interest on the part of a team with a similarly cheap starter (like Crawford) willing to spend a bit more than the norm for their backup, but I'd be surprised. I think teams want, well, what the Hawks got last year: A backup for around $600K. They would not want him for the same reason you liked him back then and don't much like him next season. His salary hike is going to make him no longer really worth the expenditure in the cap era, where last year he was quite decent for the money.

This has everything to do with his raise.

The guy is Masterton winner though. He's a backup goalie with hardware, that's pretty rare.

I wait until the start of next season to answer this.

If we get Kipper, Luongo or Thomas, it makes sense.

$1M for a backup goalie is not that exorbitant anymore. I do not see the issue.

Emery was great for the Flyers up until his hip injury. Many fans believe that if we had him in the playoffs we would have beaten Chicago

Emery is a strange case. Some analysts and the majority of Hawks fans love the guy and are very happy with his production last season. He was praised all year for his production and winning percentage. Personally, I think he is one of the worst goalies in the league, as his numbers and ability through my eyes reflect. Difference of opinion.
