Interesting to see if he can score some goals or just continue to decline.

Awesome. Good for both sides, no matter what the term is. I think Av's, I think Hejduk (and Roy, and Sakic, and Forsberg, and Blake, and Foote, and Selanne/Karyia for that time...)

Didn't get to watch him this year but he must have some hockey left in him.

THANK GOD. I would cry if he signed somewhere else. And it gives the youngins another year to focus on "their" game while the last remaining grizzled vet has the 'C'. Gives Landeskog and O'Reilly another year to mature.

PHEW.

Same. Nice to see him giving it another year so that he can maybe go out on top. IIRC he had a great start to the season, but cooled off significantly throughout the year. Hopefully he can string a nice season together and retire in a good light or maybe even play another season.

He cooled off as soon as he was named captain. Some of us Avalanche fans have wondered if the added responsibility was too much for him to handle seeing as there was really no indication of injury, etc, to set him back so suddenly. He will get time this off-season to digest being the Avs' captain and return back to old form.

That's what we were trying to figure out. He looked fine physically. He speed is as good as ever. His puck handling is fine. The shot is fine. But he wasn't in the right place at the right time anymore, he was making bad passes, and turned the puck over a lot. He wasn't even great defensively anymore. So we're hoping it was all just a mental thing.

Agreed wholeheartedly, seeing Duke in other teams jersey would be a tough pill to swallow. He's an Av for life.

He was quite done at the end of last year, and I have a feeling things aren't going to be pretty in 12/13. I hope he gets off to a hot start or else there's no way he'll even replicate his 14 goals from last year.

I was hoping he'd retire... Oh well as long as he takes on a role like Foote did in his final year I won't mind... 3rd line.

Honestly I dont think his game has dropped as much as it looked like last season.

I think the biggest problem for him was that when he got the Captaincy, he tried to be a leader to hard and stopped focusing on his game, and because of this he played significantly worse then he could. He was playing pretty well in October and November, then it went down hill.

I think one of two things will happen this year. He'll either mutually agree to give the C to someone else, as he likely realized that it hurt his game. Or he'll revert back to previous years when he wasnt the Captain, and instead of focusing so much on acting like a leader, he'll play his game how he's played for so long, and be a leader on the ice.

I honestly dont think his game has dropped off as much as it appeared. I still think he can pot 20 goals next year.

At the very least, 2M is a nice contract for him, and frees up more cap space for the Avs next year!

He still had decent speed and great hands, but for some reason he looked lost last season. Its most likely adjustment to the new system and being a captain for the first time. Hopefully he finds his game again and score another 20+ goals that hes fully capable of.

Dang you Duke and padding your goal totals against Vancouver.
Great signing for the Avs, I was hoping he would retire so the Avs wouldn't have such a potent offense again. Such a good young top 6 with Duke still playing to top it off.

Doesn't sound like he'd ever go anywhere else anyways. Just going to keep signing rolling 1-year contracts until he decides to call it quits.

Exactly, but there were rumors circulating that the Avalanche did not want to re-sign Hejduk and he wanted to play another year. Thankfully that was all a farce. Honestly though, with Sakic in office, there is no way they would not re-sign Duke if he wanted to return. My biggest fear was that he would retire and the Avs would have to prematurely name a 'C'. This delays it one more season.

Very gentleman like contract. Avs don't really need him back because he isn't that effective no more, plus not a great leader from what I hear. Letting him play until he wants is something I would like to see more of. Like Modano not being given a contract after being the face of the franchise is just terrible, plus he retired with like 1499 games or something
