well, the guy who decides on the discipline is also out of touch with reality, so...

If he wasn't a Ranger, I'd say zero.

probably two, should be one or just a fine. i only say this because the player he hit changed directions and moved his head quite rapidly, putting himself in much more jeopardy, just before the hit. take the hit, pansy.

Newbury would seem more likely to me. He's more the grinder type like Prust--that being said he's not quite as talented but Wellman if he's in is going to be on the 4th line with Rupp and Mitchell well...?--who fits better?

James Neal gets one game for his head shots on Couturier and Giroux on the same shift. No injury though Couturier had to go off for a spell. Ovechkin leaves his skates to hit Girardi up high--no injury and no suspension. The hit by Prust wasn't worse than any of those and no injury. At this point though--consistency on Shanahan's part--forget it. But I don't see any reason that Prust should get more than a game considering all that.

That being said it was not a smart play on Prust's part.

Hanzal got one game for his hit on Brown. One game for that? Zuccarello should be in for Prust if he is suspended. Zuccarello said he was about 2 weeks away from playing on May 23. Its almost 2 weeks on May 21. He has been skating with the other Pack players.

Torts loves Newbury? Since when?

If Zucc is healthy then it isn't a question. But if not, it should be Wellman.

I think one could argue there was more intent on the Prust hit than Hagelin.

And weber got a fine for his WWE move. But hagelin got 3 for his. Prust is low on the star list so he can be an example. 3 games easy.

Alfredsson suffered a concussion on the Hagelin hit. Volchenkov didn't miss a shift and he didn't go into the quiet room for any apparent injury. Byron Bitz got a 2 game suspension for a hit on Kyle Clifford which caused a concussion in game 1 over a month ago. Clifford has not played since that hit.

For sure. The NHL hasn't been taking intent into account as much as they should, though. Because Alfredsson is both a star, and was injured, they threw the book at Hags despite there being no intent. Given that Prust is not a repeat offender, that there was no resulting injury, and that it's the playoffs, my prediction is one game.

I still maintain that the players involved are the primary factors. They'll detail history, injury, intent, "bracing for impact" type excuses, strict liability to justify the number of games/fine.

If you are a star, you have no history and there wasn't an injury, and besides, you were just bracing yourself from Zetterberg's helmet bouncing off the glass and into your chest.

If you are a no-name, there is no room for this type of play in the game. The victim may suffer recurring symptoms in the future, and you are responsible for your stick/arm/hard surfaces once you engage in physical contact.

Most say 3 or 1, Shanny will split the difference.... than add 1 for being a blueshirt.

I'm gonna be very upset with the league if he's suspended. They've based it on injuries and history all along and there's none of that here.

no games. Volchenkov changed his position/direction just before the hit when he tried turning away. if he kept on the original path, it would have been a non-issue. no games. MAYBE a fine. MAYBE.

I really don't think those kinds of hits should be supension worthy, it was clearly accidental. But I do there'll be a suspension here. My immediate reaction, was "oh man, Pruster's getting two games here", and I think that'll be the outcome.

The Rangers will probably eliminate the Devils from the playoffs before Prust returns. Go Rangers!

i watched the replay again and Volchenkov totally stops and spins to avoid the hit. You can see Prust pushing his gloves forward expecting to make contact with Ninja Vanish Volchenkov and in the whiff + Volchenkov spinning away, the elbow catches the head.

In summary

this was an illegal head hit
The head was the principle point of contact
The head was not targeted as Volchenkov significantly changes direction at the last moment
Prust has no prior history
The play did not result in an apparent injury

suspension: 1 game (to hold Prust accountable and so Shanny doesn't look like a pandering shiv and Prust does not have star status). If compared to the Giroux suspension though, it is feasible that Prust could get away with a fine. Giroux was angry at the refs and took it out on Zubrus, delivered a very late hit, and Zubrus did not change his head position at all although frankly, that Giroux hit deserved more than 1 game but maybe that is where the whole star status thing comes into play.
