The fans gave him the name after his stellar rookie season and he's since just sort of accepted it. Lundqvist is as humble as they come.

You got that one right. Wah...Lundqvist has a nickname. Wah...the Rangers signed a kid from college when they already had his rights...waaaah.

There is many kings with the first name Henry, Henrik is close to Henry. I think it's as simple as that

There is only one King left in the playoffs and his name is Derek.

its a clear reference to Magnus Henriksson - the man who usurped the Swedish throne (after murdering King Sverker the Elder and King Eric the Saint)

how did you miss that.

Larry Brooks started it in a column in october 2005, Rangers fans adopted it during that season.

Personally I think The Fjord is better but it's too late to change.

I can't believe this is a serious question.

It's a play on words, ever hear of King Henry?

Nobody can EVER compare Henrik to Lebron James. Lebron was a superstar before he even graduated high school. Henrik wasn't even drafted in the first round! He came out of nowhere and became an elite goaltender his first season. Lebron proclaimed HIMSELF as King James. The NY media called Hank "King". Totally different. Lebron's competitiveness has been questioned. Hanks has NEVER been questioned.

Please don't even mention the two in the same sentence.

I remember that one of the swedish tabloids NHL-blogger mentioned that Lundqvist tricked a teammate of his to call him "Kungen" - which means "The King" in swedish - quite many years ago and he kept calling him that so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the origin of the nickname.

"The Fjord" wouldn't make much sense since fjords are found in Norway..

Its apparent everything the Rangers do bother you, just like your crying about Kreider joining the team in the playoffs. Sorry we were here first little bro.

That one doesn't make sense either. I mean, he's not even a video game character!

Now why would that be a reason he's called the King? Color me curious.
