I also think that he almost the Rangers squad two years ago. However, now, with all the young prospects that they have, he was falling really far on the depth chart.
What with injuries to the core, Valentenko had every chance in the world to make the Rangers this year but had a terrible camp and preseason.

Per Elite Prospects, Andreas Thuresson, who played this past season with Connecticut under an NHL deal with the NY Rangers, has signed with Brynas of the Elitserien. Thuresson, 24, had 13 goals and 21 points in 73 games with Connecticut this year. He was a 5th round choice, 144th overall, of Nashville in 2007 before being dealt to the Rangers in exchange for Brodie Dupont.

If an RFA signs overseas do the NHL team still retain his rights?

Also, add Riku Helenius (G) to TBL for RFA.

As long as their NHL teams continue to qualify them, they retain those rights for a while. I'm not sure how long, though, to be honest.

I'm not going to add RFAs playing overseas because there would be just too many players to list (Anaheim has guys like Petteri Wirtanen and Petri Kontiola whom we'll likely never see in the NHL again but might still be their property).

Carolina RFA G Mike Murphy announced on twitter that he has signed in the KHL for next year. No team listed yet.

I would scratch him from that list. He died in that plane crash in Russia.

Per Elite Prospects, Milan Kytnar who got into one game with Edmonton last year but split the majority of the year between the AHL and SM-liiga, has signed with Slovan Bratislava of the Czech Elite League.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't look in my remarks column while preparing the list. I also removed Alexander Yasyunov (New Jersey) from my list as he also died in that plane crash.

Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that Ramo is not a UFA this year? He is still flames property until he comes over I believe which could be a year or more away.

Probably released.

A bunch of these players have probably already been released (It's only speculation however). For example, Mike Wall and Paul Ranger who have retired from hockey.

By the way, those players do count in the 90 players reserve list (Signed players, unsigned prospects + those "special" RFAs)

He will be a UFA at 27 years old, if he isn't signed by then.

If he isn't signed, Karri Ramo will become a Group 3 (unrestricted) free agent on July 1, 2014. For RFAs to become UFAs, a player has to be 27 years old as of June 30. His birthday is July 1, 1986 so he won't be on the NHL UFA list until 2014.

There are a couple of former restricted free agents each year who after turning 27 aren't on the Group 3 (unrestricted) free agent list because they were released. Only two come to mind. Eric Himelfarb was a RFA in 2007 (Detroit) and was 27 years old by July 1, 2010. However, he attended the Panthers training camp in 2009 and wasn't listed on the 2010 free agent list. Matt Ryan was a RFA in 2007 (Los Angeles) and was 27 years old by July 1, 2011. He signed with Manchester (AHL) in 2007 and wasn't on the 2011 free agent list.

Almost all of the RFAs eventually become Group 3 (unrestricted) free agents.

Alexandre Giroux, one of the best snipers at the AHL level who also got into 9 games with Columbus last season, has signed with Dinamo Riga of the KHL.

Also, Jason Strudwick, who played last year in Sweden after 674 NHL games, has announced he plans to retire.

According to Joy Lindsey, who covers the Binghamton Senators of the AHL, the Senators plan to qualify all their RFAs, save for Craig Schira. And, yes, that includes Nikita Filatov. In fact, Lindsey speculates that the Sens have offered deals slightly better than QOs to try and encourage the players to sign early.

Columbus re-signs Ryan Russell.

Quote:
The Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way NHL-American Hockey League contract with center Ryan Russell, club Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=632694

Russell, 25, played 41 games for Columbus this past season. He was scheduled to become an UFA this summer.

As for Helenius, I think it's 50/50 he comes back. Tampa can't be confident in Helenius as a #1 with so little NHL experience and already have a solid #2 under contract in Garon. Plus, with KHL teams rumored to be interested, I think he could very well end up in Europe for another year and come back in 2013-14.

Per Elite Prospects, C Paul Szczechura has signed with Lev Praha of the KHL. Szczechura, 26, had 1 goal and 4 points in 9 games with Buffalo last season but spent the majority of the season with Rochester of the AHL. He is scheduled to become a RFA on July 1st.
