BillHoppeNHL: Derek Whitmore @dwhitmore21, reporting Paul Szczechura heading to the KHL next season. Big void for Rochester to fill.

Booo. Playing for Prague. I liked his game...still our property but now unavailable for recall?

No, he was on a one-year deal and was UFA. He's gone.

I thought he deserved more of an opportunity with Buffalo this past season

I'm pretty sure he was restricted. Either way, doesn't matter. If he is, I'm sure they'll still qualify him to retain his rights.

@pham1717 @jasonn27 Paul Szczechura signed a 1-year contract with a team in Prague. #Sabres would maintain N.A. rights if they qualify him.

I'm assuming its for more money than he can get in North American so I say good for him. Guys in his position need to make what they can when then can.

He wasn't particularly remarkable after his first couple games playing with Vanek and Pominville.

Does this mean Adam will go back to center in Rochester? Or is it way too early to say with AHL vet UFAs yet to be signed?

They'll more than likely sign a vet replacement. Maybe 2. I'm sure he'll stay on the wing.

That was also my thought when I heard the news too. It's also a move that'll only add fuel to the fire for more vets in Rochester.

Paul Szczechura to play hockey in Europe:
Quote:
Center Paul Szczechura, one of the few offensively gifted forwards on the Rochester Americans’ roster, is leaving to play in Europe.

Szczechura said on Monday that he has signed a one-year contract with the KHL team HC Lev in the Czech Republic.

“I wanted to try something new,” he said. “I kind of had to take advantage of the opportunity.”

Szczechura, 26, finished second in goals (21) and points (46) on the Amerks despite playing in only 57 of their 76 regular-season games. He had one assist in three playoff games. He played nine games with the parent Buffalo Sabres and had 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 points.
Quote:
Szczechura is a restricted free agent, and the Sabres can maintain his NHL rights if they make a qualifying offer by June 25. General manager Darcy Regier told reporters at a news conference on Monday that the team will qualify all of their restricted free agents.

Szczechura said the idea of playing in Europe wasn’t necessarily prominent in his mind when the season ended in late April, but he ended up making the decision last week.

“It’s a one-year thing and then we’ll see how it goes,” he said. “There were always thoughts of coming back (to Rochester). The organization was great, everything was good.

“This was just something I wanted to try.”

At least we still have his rights. And now maybe Darcy will stock the cupboard with some high quality vets.

And in an unrelated move maybe Rochester gets a GM one day.

"The right center ice is a priority," Regier said in First Niagara Center. "The real unknown here is what the trade market will hold. Nothing has started. It doesn’t get started until after the playoffs. Teams begin to talk, and then it really builds as you go into the draft.

"It’s tough to know what will be available, but if we can find the right centerman it would help."

It was also floating around that he had signed a KHL deal last year before signing with Buffalo, but it was voided because of a knee injury.

It's clearly something he's wanted to do for a couple seasons now.
