Flashback: Jose Theodore

A lot of people will remember Theodore for allowing 18 goals on 63 shots in his last 4 games in a habs uniform. You will also remember him as having one of the worst seasons put up by a starting goalie in the last decade, mixed in with bizarre off ice incidents. Watching Theodore evolve over the past 3 or 4 years has really been fascinating IMO. Instead of the tiny butterfly goalie who always went down to his knee's way to early, he's become a hybrid who has learned to stay on his feet. Obviously, his lateral speed is shot. He was easily as fast as Jonathon Quick is now ten years ago. Whether people will ever admit it or now. Do you think if he played the hybrid style he does now, mixed with his mid 20's speed, it would have been enough to help him achieve his true potential?

The one thing I remember is that he was getting beaten glove side constantly during his last year or so. Even shots from pretty far away would go by him. Maybe I'm giving too much importance to some iffy goals he let by, but it's really how I remember the latter stages of his time here in Montreal (beside his off-ice troubles, of course).

I'm talking about his pre lockout days The two years after the lock out were pretty messy.

I think off-ice issues were the biggest thing standing in his way.

I think what was between his ears was what was standing in his way.

Ten years from now. You'll be posting the same thing. Only it'll be Carey Price's turn.

Carey seems to have his head on straight now but after his first season it was suspect wether he was going to survive in this league and especially in Montreal.

Thankfully he seems to have come to terms with the spotlight on him all day every day when he is here during the season.

Not to get too TMZ in here, but didn't he get dumped by his girlfriend because he had allegedly cheated on her with Hilton? Could be wrong, this was some time ago.

I never really liked Theodore in Montreal but these last few years he's really earned my respect. He had a lot to deal with and at the end of the day he had a decent career, I wouldn't mind seeing him play with us again. At one point I was sure he was done in the NHL but he persevered and was able to adapt. He sure came a long way because in Montreal he was a attention *****.

I remember Jose for one of the best seasons ever by a Habs goalie pre-lockout, including an upset of the 'ruins in the playoffs. Roy has the king but he never won a Hart . . .

If there ever was an example of a flash in a pan, Jose was it. From hero to zero in record time.

Never felt theo was a good goalie, he was reckless and seemed like a mess waiting to happen. Trading him was one of gaineys few intelligent moves but I still remember the rage of suggesting such a thing at the time.

Say what you want about his horrific demise, but he was the beginning of the turnaround of the franchise around 2001-2002. Those two series against Boston (remember when Zednik got cheapshotted by Mclaren), he was awesome (the second series we came back from down 3-1 and he had a huge part in it).
He won the Hart and Vezina and it wasn't just one fluke year. We got 2-3 solid years out of him and as a Habs fan I thank him for that, given numerous other flops have occurred since. Down the road it all got to him, but when he was good he was really good and like I said, we beat Boston twice in the playoffs. Can't complain about that (and the Vezina season that got us into the playoffs). I have good memories of that. It goes to show how much of being a goalie is mental. He really had it for a few years and then it all unraveled.

Price is not Theodore and by that I mean the end result is going to be better. Couple of years from now, I'm expecting a Cup, not just a series victory against a rival.

I liked Theo but started to hate him when the french media were praising him even if he was playing badly.
I remember Houde and Pednault screaming in extase everytime he was making a routine save.
