RW Mathers, 18, was a 7th round choice, 206th overall, of the Flyers in 2011. In 65 games with Peterborough of the OHL, he had 9 goals, 17 points and 177 Penalty Minutes. He also played 9 games with the Flyers AHL affilliate in Adirondack, scoring no points but 26 PIM.

LW Johnston, 20, was never drafted. In 58 games with Humboldt of the SJHL he had 29 goals and 81 points. Last July, Johnston announced he had committed to attending Union of the NCAA for the 12-13 season. With him signing a contract, that has obviously changed.
Signed out of the SJHL/Junior A? That's unusual..

Yep, the only two notables I can think of that have done it are Ruslan Fedotenko (SJHL followed by USHL) and Dainius Zubrus (CJHL and MTJHL).
There are also a number of enforcers that have done it, but they're not notable and I can't think of their names off the top of my head.
He even had a full ride scholarship to Union College starting next season, so he must have had serious interest from NHL teams.

It expired after last this past season and wasn't renewed until the WC. So yeah they do have now, but didn't have it a few weeks ago officially. That's why the finnish prospects are only now being officially signed.

You'd think the Flyers would know it's the "Saskatchewan" Junior Hockey League and not the Saskatoon Junior Hockey League. Saskatoon's not even in that league.

Not notables, but the Caps signed Dustin Stevenson out of the SJHL in April 2010 when he was 20yo; was planning to play at St Lawrence. Has played the last 2 seasons on his ELC in the ECHL; has one season remaining on his NHL ELC.

http://capitals.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=524061

Also, the Caps signed Jake Hauswirth straight out of the USHL in May 2009. Had been expected to play at Michigan Tech before he signed the NHL entry-level contract.

The original transfer agreement post-NHL lockout was through 2010-11; I assumed it was extended through 2011-12, but doesn't it end this off-season? I know the separate transfer agreement with Sweden was supposed to end after this season.

Just my 2 cents, had the priveledge of watching Johnston all year for the Broncos. I wondered several times during the season if he'd get signed to an NHL deal after coming out of college in a few years time, so it's not entirely surprising to me that he got inked to a deal already. He is a silky smooth forward with great offensive instincts and great finish.

He was hands down IMO the top forward in the entire RBC Cup tournament (looking better even then more notable players like Mario Lucia and Wade Murphy from Penticton).

One game in particular he cycled the puck around the Soo Thunderbirds zone for a solid 5 and a half minutes with team mates. They wound up scoring twice during that large period of dominance, but had it not been for tournament MVP John Kleinhans in net Johnston probably could've had 3 or 4 goals in a 6 minute stretch alone.

He finished the tournament with a scoring line of 5 goals and 4 assists in 5 games inlcuding 3 game winners. The guy is clutch and knows how to score. Not sure how his game translates to the pro leagues but he is definitely the best all-around forward I've seen lace up for the Broncos in my time.

Updates on a couple prospects

NYR: Jesper Fasth: Is close to signing with Rangers per http://translate.google.se/translate...ers%2F&act=url

PHI: Flyers are talking to Brendan Ranford's agent though whether or not a deal gets done is really up in the air.
Quote:
Ranford said Monday from his Edmonton home that he has nothing to report but that the Flyers have been talking with his agent, Mark MacKay.
"I'm not sure what's going to happen," Ranford said. "I've been staying out of it and waiting and seeing what happens. If it happens, it does; if it doesn't, it doesn't."

Rumors have the Senators also signing Darren Kramer.

per Sens' prospect Matt Puempel that was retweeted by Kramer himself

Quote:
Congrats to @DarrenKramer22 on signing with the ‪#sens‬ today ‪#tuff‬ ‪#chlheavy‬
https://twitter.com/mpuempel/status/205107793437528064

Kramer, 20, had 22 goals and 40 points in 71 games with Spokane of the WHL, to go along with 200 penalty minutes. He was a 6th round choice, 156th overall in 2011.

From what I have read about this guy he's going to be an extremely interesting prospect to watch. Smart, tough - Cherry's gonna be ranting and raving about him for the next 10 years or so.

I think Logan Shaw (FLA) is a confirmed signing.

I think that was ESPN and forecaster.ca getting a little ahead of themselves. As far as I've been able to ascertain through various sources (Including the Panthers own website), Shaw has yet to be signed. On or around the date that ESPN printed that, Shaw signed an ATO with Florida's AHL team in San Antonio and I'm thinking that's where the confusion is coming from.

So signing Granlund apparently means we have "another Finnish sniper in our line-up". Did I miss something?

Culek is definitely an interesting prospect. Has all the tools to be more, probably no toolbox from what I've seen but could become a good grinder if he wants to be.

I would assume it's in reference to Mikko Koivu?

Well of course it is but everyone knows Koivu is not a sniper. Also, when they say "another" it almost sounds like we have at least a couple Finnish forwards already when actually only have Koivu. Last time I checked, Backstrom isn't a sniper.
