The official Twitter account for the Red Wings' Traverse City-based training camps has confirmed that their deleted tweet from earlier today, which stated that Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom would be retiring, was based on a joke on the Red Wings' own Facebook page.
That joke has also been removed, but @TheNorm41 states that it read similarly to "Lidstrom is retiring...to his computer to vote for Pavel."
I can confirm the shenanigans. I checked my Facebook newsfeed and the Official Red Wings Facebook account posted something like:
"Nicklas Lidstrom will be retiring" then there was a drop click and it said, "...to his computer chair to vote for Pavel Datsyuk for the NHL 13 cover" or something like that.
It was a VERY bad joke, and even though I was only fooled for about 2 seconds, I was honestly pretty pissed about it after I read the rest of the post (especially since I hate EA games). I know it was supposed to be well intended joke, but you just don't make jokes like that to millions of fans. Even though I think he's coming back, there's still that possibility that he calls it a career, so that joke was just stupid on their part.
Had a quick exchange with my contact at the Joe. Sounds like there was a little laugh (and some angst) at the rink about this whole thing.... wholly false with no substance. Lidstrom still hasn't decided.
if he comes back, it would seem selfish to demand another 6 million. he's only going to be around 1 or 2 more seasons. detroit needs to spend money on guys like suter and parise who who have a lot of career left. its time to gear up for the future.
