Aside from Carbomb, Mayers is the best FA Bowman has brought in.

RDS is perfectly reliable.

Decent move. With Carcillo, that shakes out most of the 4th line. The only question now is who's playing in the middle.

Why is there a Slater slurp fest going on the past few weeks?

With regards to bringing back Mayers

Dont really have an issue with it

Cheap , Played solid for most part in 4th line role and seems well liked in lockeroom

Why not? Seems like a decent enough fit for the price.

And yeah, glad to see Mayers return. I've got no issues with that.

he was dead on his skates the last 20 games of the season, no reason to bring him back. he brought nothing close to a physical presence in the playoffs, which was his only role to play. we have all these kids lining up waiting for some spots to open, and we resign this trashcan player...

sorry, I am calling it now, here we go again this offseason....

Emery and now Mayers....looks like Oduya is next

This isn't as bad as Emery, but still a really rushed decision.

Like the signing as long as he gets some games off during the season. No point in having him run out of gas again.

What kids do we have for 4th line duty?

Guys like Flick/Paradis are not NHL ready and most of the rest of our prospects are top 9 guys not 4th liners

Ben Smith isn't suited for 4th line duty (And is coming off an awful year at NHL level) , Kyle Beach hasn't shown enough to warrant an NHL roster spot in any role yet

Guys like Didomenico and Gilbert are awful and doubtful to ever be NHL players at this point

I would understand if this was Bruno being re-signed or another washed up top 9 winger but when it comes to 4th liners in system no guys are NHL ready for that role

Who are these kids you speak?

I'd rather see Beach play 4th line duties than no duties at all.

Emery got a raise eleven times the size Mayers got.

Mayers is a good locker room presence and a gritty guy who brings toughness and an edge to the fourth line. I am fine with it for $600K.

How can you have issues with signing a well-liked (by observers and teammates) 4th line vet for 600k?

The only thing to worry about with Mayers now is how often he's going to be playing. With Q at the helm, that's anyone's guess.

His presence on the roster won't even slightly harm this team.

People just seem to to love to nitpick anything they can. I really don't understand it. Mayers earned his 550K and then some with his play last year, and he certainly will be worth his 600K next year, IMO.

because he is taking the spot from a younger player with actual talent and ability.

we saw what this guy did this year, and sadly it faded very fast. how anyone wants this guy back is beyond me...

I want Hayes, Beach, Shaw (hopefully bumped down with added depth), Danault, McNeill etc filling in those 4th line roles with Carcillo. Mayers sucks and takes up space. the guy doesnt fight or barely hits anymore....what role does he play on this team besides being another guy past his prime that we will hang onto again??

I dont really care if it was for 2 dollars, this is the crap we are going with again.

this team underperformed and we need to get rid of dead weight. instead we have already resigned Emery and now Mayers, two players who shouldnt see the light of day on a Stanley Cup contending team. There is no message being sent for a shakeup here, hell we even kept the most incompetent coach I have ever seen....we are bringing back bodies that we have no reason to bring back this early on (Mayers/Emery)...

it is a bad sign for us to have to resign this guy early on with a lot of free agents available to fill the role. I am starting to feel that Bowman is scared, clueless, or something completely different when it comes to free agents.

there is no reason to sign this guy now as he would be begging us for a job for next year. not a single team would make a move for him and if there might be 1-2 teams it surely wouldnt be until the end of free agency to fill in a body.

there was no reason to sign him with what is still out there via free agency, and certainly no reason to sign him when we have a number of kids looking to fill a roster spot next year.

this is the beginning of another turd fest free agency and some of you guys are ignoring the early trend

Yeah! Let's stunt the growth of young players by letting them play 6 minutes a night! Great plan. Playing 4th line minutes in an energy role is not going to help anyone with an upside that goes past the 4th line.

yeah, lets for one minute assume any of these guys are going to be more then bottom 6 players.....who are you kidding?

these guys are energy guys and are perfect in that role. their growth isnt going to be stunted playing in the NHL, it gets stunted rotting in the minors. look at all the players that spend more then 2-3 years in the AHL.....most simply never come close to their potential, and many more never even make it.

in the next 3-4 years, there is no way Beach, Hayes, Shaw, Danault, etc are top 6 players...no room for them and not their game....so whats your point with them playing in a position they will be playing in 2-3 years?

HELLO EXACTLY!

I'd rather have Beach and Hayes and such play 20 a night in RFK then 6 a night with the Hawks if they aren't going to be in the Hawks top 6.

hello exactly what?

you make no sense...

at no point in time are any of these guys going to be top 6 players...so why the hell are we worried about having them play 20 minutes a night in the AHL, when they likely never will in the NHL...or certainly not on this team?

YEAH, cant wait to build up their confidence by playing 20 minutes a night in Rockford, only to find out for the next 3-4 years they will be playing 6 minutes a night in the NHL....yeah, I can see the need of resigning Mayers to postpone the eventual...

Meh. Cool with it if he's the 13th forward and gets some games off to stay fresh.

i think this is a great signing.. but he should not play every game

hes a really good player that was 1 of our 3 good offseason signing

this deal won't hurt but he should be a 13th forward.. play 40-50 games

good locker room vet to stick up for his players..

we need guys like him and carcillo... a lot less of brunette, oduya, o'donnell
