can someone briefly explain the #/5 protection thing?
Club which fulfill conditions (to finance own school, minimum 20 milions rubles/year) can protect 5 own kids. This club HAS TO offer the kid contract this summer. If not, club loses right (plus pay fine?? not sure, you have to read rules)

So teams could properly protect their own players and claim the rights to the leftovers and not let it go into a bidding war if/once they become good enough.
Just because players wont play for the team means nothing. Look at the NHL draft - outside of the first round, none of those kids will ever play in the NHL.
MLB draft? It's like 30 rounds, NONE of those kids are making it, but its a system so teams can claim the rights, bring kids into their development system if they choose, and avoid a free agent bidding war
Whats the point of drafting Swedes and Finns? They won't play in Russia.
as example Amur - they have finnish coach. And I can name another clubs. Point can be aslo in financial compensation (depends on round), which you must pay to RUSSIAN club who raised kid. If your club has weak own kids + you dont want to pay money to some russian club = you pick foreigner.

CSKA had a whopping 16 players drafted from their 95 group, managed to protect 10. Why they drafted Zakharov from Kiev - I dunno, he's got a contract with Donbass already. Maybe they want to use him a leverage in a trade or something...

I don`t know about Haralds Podzinsh beeing talented,his stats are very mediocre.

That's a pretty rare example. Obviously gems exist (Datsyuk and Zetterberg) but I'm just speaking in general. Just like the KHL draft - in general, those picked wont make it.
