That was when they were free-falling. And the Rangers WERE prominently mentioned when Ryan was rumored to be available. During the lead-up to the trade deadline, the Ducks thought they were still in it (they had made a big push for most of the spring and were one of the hottest teams in the league) and so were not sellers (to the earlier point about the deadline still being too early, especially with the advent of the SO). Nobody on the Ducks was available then.

Of course, within a week of the deadline, they were trailing off again and wound up finishing up in the bottom 5th of the league. Damn Boudreau screws us wherever he goes!

Outside of what a few wanted to see moved, who were the names thrown around by Sather?
Come on man, do you really think if he inquired about Nash that he wouldn't inquire about Ryan?

Ryan was rumored around December/January. I think Sather may have wanted for the Ducks to further plummet so he could have more leeway.

That went out the window once the Ducks were back to winning a few games and firing Carlyle.

The Jackets - on the other hand - got FAs during the off-season, did not remedy their free fall - or try to salvage their season in any way - and had a firesale...close to the deadline.

Other than wasting a pick on John Scott, Sather didn't make a deadline mistake. He didn't overpay for pointless rentals. Not getting Jeff Carter and his horrid contract is a win anyway you look at it.

I'm not critical of what Sather did this year, it's what he didn't do this year especially at the deadline. Lamoriello gets Zdlicky and Pontakorovsky at the deadline and they make significant contributions to the Devils run and Sather sits on his hands.

Believe it or not, someone in-between periods on NBC Sports Network said that Lombardi was willing to deal Dustin Brown at deadline if deal was right. Someone also said that Hasek wanted to play in NHL again at 47 so take it for what its worth.

Ponikarovsky was picked up in January, the Scott deal was made for the Flyers and Bruins match up which never occurred. I actually thought Sather played the trading deadline perfect. This team was clicking and why bring in Nash and rip the chemistry apart. The Ranger's futture is bright with Hagelin and Kreider in the fold w/Thomas, JT Miller, Fasth, Lindberg ,Yogan, and St Croix looking for roster spots next spring. Combine those assets with a young D with Erixon and McIlrath in the wings it was well worth it to sit back and see what this team had. Now you evaluate the season in a month w/the personel you have and move forward. For once in a long long time the Rangers future looks bright.

I heard that about Brown to, listening to NHL radio the other day, and I think it was Peirre McGuire who brought it up during an interview, could be wrong though.

And that news about Hasek is apparently true, he told to some random Chezch radio station that he wants to come back

Your dead wrong; he desperately needed to get an experienced defenseman in here or a guy like Paulson who could win faceoffs. Our faceoff % is for **** because players like Stepan can't win a faceoff to save his ass.
If you're pinning your hopes on prospects like Thomas, Lindberg, Yogan and St Croix, you're in for a big disappointment!

The Ryan discussions took place in November. Anaheim took him off the market and never put him back on the market. There are no indications Ryan will put on the market this summer.
