I don't see Burke as a great asset manager at all... he got lucky on some deals just like every GM does. Some players just take another step in their development after being dealt.
Burke has given away a lot of assets or seen them devalued after the brought them to his organization... and he's always been a terrible drafter as well, and hasn't accumulated a lot of assets through the draft through most of his career.
At best, he's average when it comes to overall asset management.
Burke built a Stanley Cup winning team and drafted the Sedins when everyone thought it was a gimmick. The dude get's on my nerves, and I've called for his head plenty of times, but he's made some great deals.

14 drafts. Minus three for the ones as Toronto GM no one's including, minus another because Vancouver had fired him, so 10 in total. That list also forgets Jarkko Ruutu, but yeah, it's not stellar. Not great, but not as terrible as some make him out to be, he's made some pretty good picks.

After his last draft as Ducks GM Burke hired Martin Madden Jr. to be the chief of amateur scouting, and wow did that pay off big(or so it appears to be).

Hahaha true, but he might not be even the biggest steal in those three years, believe it or not(easily the best player, but not best steal). And out of 22 picks, I would say 13 have pretty legit shots to be NHL regulars, and who knows about the rest. It's way too early to tell, but with how everything's gone, it looks very impressive.

Wow that's better than a 50% clip. That's pretty phenomenal. Good for you guys. Reminds me of when we had JFJ in charge. Terrible, terrible GM, but the guy was an amazing scout. Gunnarsson, Kulemin, Reimer, some other guys I'm forgetting, all in the mid/late rounds.

Like I said, it's way, way too early to tell, but right now it looks pretty good. 5 have played in the NHL already, 3 have established themselves as regulars, and that's not including WHL scoring phenom Emerson Etem or SM-Liiga top defenseman Sami Vatanen. Murray deserves a lot of credit as well, as of those 13, only Max Friberg(143-11) and Vatanen(106-09) were outside the top 100 picks in that draft year. Include Andy Welinski(83-11) and Igor Bobkov(76-09), and they were all in the top 50(five were first rounders). That list also doesn't include 2011 third rounder Joseph Cramarossa(65th), no one seems to be too high on him.

When he was with Vancouver they were on a really tight budget and there wasn't enough resources to hire a top level scouting department. And it's too early to judge what he's done with Toronto, though his picks don't look too bad so far, they've performed well at their respective levels.
He got really lucky with NOT having the 1st overall pick lol, or we could very well add Alex Daigle instead of Pronger to that list. He is good at drafting depth players though. I honestly think drafting is more the scouts job so I don't see why this is even being debated when talking about Brian Burke, unless its a high pick of course
He's going to sign with Edmonton and turn out to be a big bust. He'll get picked up on waivers by the Jackets 35 games in and by the end of the season he'll have 62 points.
