Scott Mellanby named Director of Player Personnel

Quote:
Montreal Canadiens executive vice president and general manager, Marc Bergevin, announced today the appointment of Scott Mellanby to the position of director of player personnel.

“We are extremely happy to have Scott Mellanby joining the Canadiens organization. Scott has an impressive background and a commanding knowledge of the league, having played for 21 seasons in the NHL before holding various management positions over the last four years. Scott is known for his character and his leadership, which made him a great team captain during six seasons with the Florida Panthers and the Atlanta Thrashers. He has extensive knowledge of the game, is well respected in the hockey circles and will become an important asset for our organization,” said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin.

Bergevin is en fuego. 3 hirings in not even a week.

Sort of wish we'd get more details as to what Mellanby's tasks will be exactly.

My guess is he will have a lot of player development responsibilities.

Interesting. I was under impression carriere would do this job in his assistant GM duties but I don't mind. Quite a team we're assembling.

He's been through some good organizations (the Canucks and the Blues). Hopefully, he learned a lot from Gillis and will bring some balance to the extremely old-school direction the FO seems to be taking.

Explain.

This is Player Personnel, guys, not Player Development (Timmins). Don't confuse the two.

Not sure why you bring up gainey or anyone would bring up gauthier either(just incase people do) as neither held this position before being fired.

Might as well say Pierre Dagenais lol, good riddance. Not much relevance.

It's good that Bergevin is hiring personel from various organisations rather than just the guys from one team like, I don't know, the old Ottawa crew.

These guys have seen how things are done in various organizations, from a player's perspective and from management's. It brings new ideas to the organization rather than the same old, and the same old has basically passed us by now.

This is awesome.

WHen I heard about Gauthier being fired all I wanted to see happen was a strong group of guys come in. When you bring in lots of strong hockey minds it's never a bad thing.

What's interesting is that they're all former players as well.

He was well liked in St-Louis. They talked of him as a potential replacement for Hitchcock. I'd like to see what he can do with our team.

Awesome, this is exactly what I wanted the Habs to do once Gauthier was fired. A fresh start and it's exactly what the Habs have done so far. Really ain't going to miss the Gainey-Gauthier duo!
