Really is too bad Smith didn't get to partner with him for a year. #wastedopportunity

You're not kidding.

If Holland plays his cards right, this could be shades of 2001 right here. In the cap era, no less.

Man, if I wasn't so upset over the fact that Nick is almost surely gone, I'd be really excited about the possibilities this summer could bring. Such is life, I suppose.

I don't think they'd report this if they weren't in the know, at least to some degree, so yeah... that basically confirms it.

Pavel is the real captain of this team, if we're talking leading by example.

I really hope some of his teammates knew about this and are able to make it back tomorrow. Remember thinking that was great with Rafalski. It would be nice to see a big turn out for him. Guess we can expect Babcock and Ilitch to be there to, the only part of the initial release that gave me pause.

Helene St. James confirmed it, so does that mean he comes back?

I'm actually quite surprised it would end like this but Yzerman retired after a 1st round exit also when his body was failing him. Perhaps Nick is more beat up then we're lead to believe.

We'll always love and admire what he's done for this team...I'd hate to see him go. We wouldn't see this many sources and reports of him retiring if they weren't true. I'm bracing myself for that being the news tomorrow morning.

That being said, if Parise and Suter aren't in the red and white next year...'12-13 is going to suck ass!

Håkan Andersson texted a respected swedish journalist that he is in fact retiring. Somehow, in my naivity, I didn't want to believe that he'd hang them up. We'll have a different team next year, that's for sure.

Lidstrom has been a Red Wing for as long I've been alive. To see this team without him will be so strange.

A legend of the game and a Top 2-5 Defenseman of all-time (depending on who you ask). I expect them to raise his jersey opening night or at least at some point next season.

Sad sad day for the Wings and Wings fans. Even if it's 96 degrees I'm wearing my Lids jersey tomorrow.

eight million a year for Suter

Eight million a year for Parise.

Wings have no choice now.

Sad day if so; may hate the Wings, but you can't hate Lidstrom. Even Trotz took him aside in the handshake line and told him to come back.

If he does retire, he's one of the greatest to play the game and has earned the right to step down when he wants. I'm not a Wings fan, but Lindstrom has been / is one of the best players of the last two decades.

Will miss him for sure.
