Where does Detroit go from here?

They have $21.5M in cap space with the cap going nowhere.

Nyquist already had a spot in the bag and with Lidstrom retiring it sounds like Smith will be coming up so that knocks it down to $20M. Add Helm and Abdelkader at about $3M combined.

That leaves about $17M to sign a forward and two defensemen.

Go.

I'm honestly not all that enthralled at the prospect of signing Suter. He's a real "hired gun" type to me, but I guess we'll see. He's a great d-man, there's no doubt about it, and he'll finally be able to know what it's like to not be on the wrong side of Pavel Datsyuk.

Go.
Give Suter 7.5M, re-sign Stuart at 3M, and give Parise 6.5M

Parise Datsyuk Hudler
Franzen Zetterberg Filppula
Cleary Helm Bertuzzi
Miller Abdelkader Eaves

Suter-Stuart
White-Kronwall
Smith-Quincey
Kindl

or:

Give Suter 7.5M, give Wideman 4.5M, and give Semin 5M:

Semin Datsyuk Franzen
Hudler Zetterberg Filppula
Cleary Helm Bertuzzi
Miller Abdelkader Eaves

Suter-Wideman
White-Kronwall
Smith-Quincey
Kindl

All-in for Ryan Suter. If they don't get Suter they make a trade.

I think you need to flip flop Parise and Suter's numbers.

Stuart is gone, that's not even in Detroit's control.

I was hoping Suter would go East but I see him as a Wing now

Well they will definitely make a play for Ryan Suter if he hits UFA, they might even try to acquire his rights if Nashville can't sign him.

If Stuart's willing to take a $3M contract, he'll be in San Jose next year.

With regards to Detroit, they certainly have the cap space to throw money at Suter and Parise, just not sure if Holland is willing to go that big.

I found he was horrible in that playoff series vs Nashville. Most of the goals the Wings were giving up were off of his mistakes.

Semin will go to the KHL before he accepts $5M anywhere.

Orpik, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if they dealt for Suter's rights. Granted, UFA rights aren't worth much, but the exclusivity of talking to him might be worth it.

Hmmm I'm sure this is what Nashville's gm is thinking as well, and in that case I feel like he'll do everything possible to keep Suter away from Detroit. He still wants Nashville to succeed, giving them Suter is the opposite of that. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nashville trade Suter's rights to the east to prevent that from happening.

EDIT: Typed too fast haha.

Anyone who pays Semin, who's only managed to score 54 points the last two year, over 5 million dollars per year is losing their mind. I guess he's off to the KHL

I'll laugh when he deals them to Yzerman and they're in Detroit 15 minutes later.

Am I one of the few that thinks the believed impact of Ryan Suter on a team is being grossly overrated? His aura just reeks of Jay Bouwmeester. Not saying they're the same player (Suter is the better player), but I could see a team grossly overpaying for his services and realizing that maybe he's not worth the money they spent on him.

So you figured out why I don't want him?

I think Detroit would look dumber to not sign him.

Almost as quickly as they did when Yzerman retired.

So detroit needs a d-man, eh? Luckily, toronto has just the guy for you!

All we ask in return is Datsyuk and Howard.

That would be funny.

But seriously, I bet you he's on the phone right now with at least 5 east teams telling them he'll give them Suter's rights just to keep him away from Detroit.
