This early in the game? I doubt it...

I'd imagine there will be quite a few teams interested in trading for Suter before July 1st if the Predators can't re-sign him. If the Wings are one of those teams, which now I think they will be, I see the price being a bit higher for them than others, considering they are division rivals. Losing Suter would hurt Nashville a lot, to Detroit even moreso.

Didn't Suter say he does not want to play in the Eastern conference? At least that's what I keep hearing. I could see Holland trading for his rights, but yeah. Why would Nashville ship him to a division foe?

What would be funnier is if Suter got traded and his agent informed the team that he still plans to sign with Detroit.

You're right, why would Nashville just ship him to Detroit in the first place? But we have to keep in mind that Suter is free to go anywhere he wants as soon as the clock strikes noon on July 1st, so if he has Detroit in his mind, he can wait without re-signing with anyone and go straight to the market if he so chooses. If Nashville can't re-sign him, there's really nothing they can do to ensure he doesn't go to Detroit, unfortunately for them.

Shipping him to Detroit doesn't make a whole lot of sense but neither does losing him for nothing.

I don't know why people are so anti-Semin here. Yeah his points were down the last two seasons. Last year he missed 20 games. This year he was playing one of the more defensively-orientated teams in the league. Not to mention seeing secondary offensive minutes, and not getting to play with either Ovy or Backstrom for most of that time. Semin is still one of the most dangerous players in the league - and I think giving him Datsyuk as a center would unleash the beast.

Semin's agent says playing in the NHL is a priority for him, so it'll be interesting to see if they can come to an agreement in Detroit, where he's looking to get that 1st-line role. I can see him hitting 40+ goals and 70+ points playing with Pavel next year.

Detroit already had enough guys taking the playoffs off. Don't need to add Semin to the list...

I'm pretty sure you'd hit a higher level once we get Weber.

Has Suter ever indicated that he wants to sign with Detroit? or are Wings fans just assuming this?

He hasn't indicated anything. There are not a that many teams that can afford him (as of now) and even less that he would play for. Lidstrom leaves? Suter likes the Red Wings philosophy of how to play hockey. It just makes sense.

It makes sense for him to go several places, but for Detroit fans Ryan Suter and Zach Parise are the guys we want and I honestly expect to get one, if not both if they go to free agency.

Well if he had wanted money he would've already signed on the dotted line in Nashville...

And like it or not, even with Lidstrom likely gone, the Wings have the money to put together a monster team.

Barring a massive increase of the cap..

Miller Abdelkader Eaves

Suter-Stuart
White-Kronwall
Smith-Quincey
Kindl
This scenario: Suter 7,5M, Stuart 3M, Parise 6,5M added for a combined 17M. But you also have Helm ~2,5M, Hudler ~4M, Quincey ~3,1M, Abdelkader ~1,0M for 10,6M combined. You also forgot Ericsson 3,2M. So all in all this roster would put us a good 9M over the cap.. Obviously Hudler, Quincey and Stuart would all be gone in order to add Suter and Parise meanwhile keeping Helm.

This scenario: Suter 7,5M, Wideman 4,5M, Semin 5M added for a combined 17M. But once again - Helm ~2,5M, Hudler ~4M, Quincey ~3,1M, Abdelkader ~1,0M for 10,6M combined. Ericsson 3,2M. This roster would also put us around 9M over the cap. Remove Hudler and Wideman minimum.

This is the type of roster that could be had within the current cap:
Nyquist-Datsyuk-Parise
Filppula-Zetterberg-Franzen
Cleary-Helm-Eaves
Miller-Abdelkader-Bertuzzi
Mursak
~$38M

Suter-Quincey
Kronwall-White
Smith-Ericsson
Kindl
~23M

Howard
McDonald
2.8M

Total: 63.8M

Not sure Helm will be getting $2.5M yet.

And Stuart and Hudler are both gone, so I'm not sure why people keep listing them.

There are hard times ahead. Wouldn't be surprised if Detroit picks up the 7-8 seed for the next couple seasons. That's if they even make the playoffs at all.

I've loved the Wings all my life but they've never had to go through losing a player THIS good. If you think Suter(if he comes here) will fill the hole, you're being a homer.

If you think losing one player is gonna instantly propel them into mediocrity you're an idiot.

Oh so they weren't mediocre this last half of the regular/post-season? Winning 1 game is definitely not mediocre.
