3 year contract for Hartley.

Apparently, when Hartley signed with Zurich a year ago he had an out clause if Calgary, Montreal, or Quebec City came calling.

Well like Stewie I've been wrong with all three previous coaches so maybe my streak will continue for the better.

I'm just glad we have a coach who was able to, against all odds, take a backend of Blake, Bourque, Foote and Roy to a Stanley Cup

I like all the talk about the Flames playing an up tempo game. Hopefully that means the end of that dump and chase BS.

One has to wonder if Jay was exploring coaching options in 2011, with some foresight that they weren't going to bring Brent back.

its likely, it can't be a coincidence Hartley had the Flames listed as one of the few teams he was allowed to speak to.

Also good on the guy running the Zurich team, sounds like the out clause was purely verbal and he held up his end.

Just because a team is stacked doesn't make them a sure thing for the cup.

But I'm sure with a nickname like yours that you have no problem judging Feaster or his moves objectively!

I like that Hartley has had to deal with some strong personalities and tough situations with past clubs. Patrick Roy was likely a very tough player to coach, then dealing with the Snyder situation in Atlanta had to test even last bit of resolve he had as a coach.

I am looking forward to next season, I love this move and think its in the right direction. I am also eager to learn what Cloutier may bring to the table, I am also curious if he also parts ways with Hartsburg and brings in Veilleux

on a side note I was looking at the Zurich roster from this season and there is a player named Patrick Bartschi on the team, any relation to Sven?

What was the last Stacked team to not win the cup? Not counting the Canucks.

I doubt it. They were born about 12 years apart, so slim chance they're brothers. Maybe cousins...? Can't find anything on it though.

Great signing for a young and developing team.
Still doesn't make sense; not unless all the rumors over why Brent Sutter left were false. Or the organization suddenly decided they wanted to go in another direction. Or Iginla made it known that he's not interested in signing an extension come July 1st. The Flames organization has made it very clear they're sticking with him so something would have had to have changed for it to make sense.

Of course, Dreger didn't say that the Flames were interested in moving Iginla, just that the rumors would start up again. Other teams could be calling to see if he's available only to have the organization say no.

SJ has been pretty stacked, as was Detroit during our cup run.
Pitts is pretty stacked as well.

Poor question. Teams disappoint, and other teams don't. If stacked teams only ever won the cup, President's trophy winners would plan parades as early as Vancouver/Toronto does.

It's not really that uncommon. Just some examples:

03/04 Colorado Avalanche
06/07 Ottawa Senators
08/09 Detroit Red Wings
11/12 Pittsburgh Penguins

Thats actually really interesting. Kinda sounds like Feaster had him in his back pocket this whole time. I don't mind though, I'm glad we are going in a different direction and I can't wait for next season to start.

And I don't think Hartley is all that similar to Sutter at all. Brent has the reputation of being a hard ass, but in actuality I think that was false. It took him 2 and a half and seasons to finally come out and say he's going to stop "asking" the team to commit to his system and start demanding it.

Very true. I was surprised it was Hartley as he is a young motivator and it seemed Montreal was the fit given that they are in a rebuild and building around youth.

Now he is in Calgary and is very vocal to his players on and off the bench.

Just as an aside, is Iginla friends with Sakic?

Both NHL head coaching jobs Hartley did a great job coming in and motivating the young players on the team. A look at what he did for Kovalchuk and Heatley as well as the young players in Colorado gives you as good an indicator as any.

In both cases, it was after his fourth season with a team going into his fifth season where he is fired. Both were due to slow starts by the team in October and then him being let go. Just a case of players that are no longer younger and motivated by yelling at them shutting him out.

Still, impressive development of young players and being able to last 4 years minimum is no small feat in the NHL.

Good signing for every young player they can bring in and have them develop together.

You don't really get your typical "stacked teams" in today's NHL.

Pittsburgh and Chicago would probably be good options for this year.

Your team can have all world talent, if they're not functioning as a 5 man team on the ice then it really isn't going to mean a damn thing.

lol @ Feaster on the FAN 960 - "If I'm put into a situation where I have to fire Bob Hartley, we can probably just help each other pack."

Having began watching the NHL not too many seasons ago I had no idea about Hartley, but I'm starting to really like this signing. I did like what he had to say during his interview on the Flames site. I'm pretty excited for next season and hopefully Feaster can make some deals or good signings this off season. We might be in better shape than everyone thinks.

Hahah well at least he knows it

And yeah I wish Sutter gave Playfair another season to fix the abysmal road record (which wasn't that much better the year after).
