He's got a top 10 skillset, you could argue he's a top five talent. He's very raw but he's got immense potential. Great awareness on both ends of the ice even if he seems to struggle defensively. It will get better, and his offense which is already great will get even better.

Don't know much about him, just know I haven't seen him ranked that high most places. But I'll take your word for it.
Honestly, it'd be pretty hard to screw this pick up. All 7 choices (mostly the first 5 though) would definitely be a good pick.

I generally see him ranked in the 12-15 range. Everything I read about him makes me think he would be a fine prospect and praises him as perhaps the best passing dman in this draft.
looking more into it 12-15 isnt really accurate. It seems like he has slipped to 15-25 or so.

It worries me that some in the organization have come out and stated that they prefer a certain position in the draft (the implication being with the 1st round pick). You take BPA and go from there. How much of our team is made up of solid players taken after the 1st round? You just don't limit your options.
If you've got a hard-on for a certain player because you think he's the cat's meow and plays a position of need within the organization then you do what it takes to move up and get him. Otherwise trust your scouts and take the best talent with the best chance to succeed. For all the dung I've flung in the Stars' direction about drafting a goaltender in the 1st round I at least respect that they drafted the player they thought was the best talent.
The ONLY time you should ever draft for position is if all else is equal.
I am optimistic that these statements are mind games like in the NFL draft, but it doesn't take an NHL GM to see that the team needs quality C prospects.

Which is why you make a trade to go get a particular player you covet rather than sitting back and picking an inferior player who happens to play a certain position. I mean, FFS we drafted a winger out of the BCHL in the 5th round five years ago who has turned into a #1 NHL center. Too many things can (and do) change.
Judging by his post history, a Jets fan with a minor interest in Dallas?
That's what caught my eye.
I have no problems with it as long as he's contributing, just thought it was a little strange for a thread like this.
A valid point, though, about size. Unless GMJN thinks Collberg is head and shoulders above the rest, I can't see his size helping him there, with us at least.
KHL teams aren't going to use high picks on players who will almost certainly never play for them unless they're so high-profile/talented that they might as well take a chance. Zibanejad was taken #129th for example. They know these Swedish kids want to play in the NHL and if that fails they'll probably go home and play in the SEL. There are more Canadians playing in the KHL than Swedes.

Just curious, who are you? I don't remember seeing you around here much.
Dallas Stars fan from Winnipeg, been a fan since around grade five, I'm twenty-two now. When the Jets were announced as coming back I had a minor interest towards them, went to the rookie camps etc, but then when I saw how many retarded homer idiots this city produced all interest was lost.
Before we suggest that the team trade back, can we look back to the disastrous history this team has with trading back? The Stars need top end talent, not an extra 3rd round pick.
You could realistically get a 2nd round pick and move back to a spot where you're still drafting similar talent.
13th for 21st and 40th
Most scouts and hockey writers have talked about the talent being fairly similar in the teens and 20s. Unless you have a particular player in mind (IMO that is Faksa and Girgensons .... maybe Gaunce), then you'll get similar value. You're very much in hit or miss territory in the teens so it's not a terrible idea.
The Stars have already talked about picking up extra picks in the Top 50.
I'd probably go with Collberg. I'm not going to get my hopes up on a particular player this year because it usually results in me knowing a whole bunch about prospect x on team y/not the Stars.

The Stars have a history of trading back, and a history of seeing useful players taken with the picks they traded while whiffing on the ones they got in exchange.
The team doesn't need more picks like a rebuilding team, it needs more talent.
