Tallinder on Lidstrom & more

From Bucky:

Quote:
NEWARK, N.J. -- Old friend Henrik Tallinder spoke about countryman Nicklas Lidstrom with reverence this afternoon after the Red Wings legend retired this morning after 20 seasons. Lidstrom was the standard for all Swedes, particularly defensemen.
Quote:
“For me, growing up, he wasn’t my biggest idol because I was too young," Tallinder said. "Once he started to make it in this league, who doesn’t look up to him? He’s an icon and everyone wants to be like him, play like him, offensively, defensively, you name it. He does it all.

"Just watching him play is almost like – I think you described it once – is almost like a symphony.”
Of course, Bucky couldn't resist reliving 7-1-07:

Quote:
Tallinder laughed when I told him Sabres owner Terry Pegula suggested his and Toni Lydman's departure in 2010 was more devastating than when Chris Drury and Daniel Briere split town in 2007. He hadn't heard Pegula thought so highly of him.

"That's a compliment, but that's B.S.," Tallinder said. "When we lost Danny and Dru, that was a kick in the butt. That's where we lost it. Nothing against Pegula, but that's where Buffalo lost a lot as a city and as a team."

Must make Leopold feel all warm and fuzzy to hear the owner say that! lol

I guess it's gonna be another new team for Leopold after next season.

Leave it to Bucky to find a way to bring up Briere/Drury yet again...

While I recall Pegula lamenting how the loss of Tallinder (and, to a lesser extent, Lydman) hurt the Sabres, he never compared it to Briere and/or Drury.....at least, in what TBN and other media outlets reported last year when Pegula took over.

It's bound to happen anyway - maybe even sooner. The Sabres have a lot of depth at the position and could use the cap space from Leopold's contract to strengthen themselves elsewhere if the right trade offer came along IMO.

Tallinder is certainly right in the assessment.

Drury was not worth 7,000,000 and it sucks that we lost Briere. We would be in the playoffs every year if he was on the team. That being said can we please move on. There are sabres fans now that were not even born then. Let it go. I miss Briere

It's funny how we keep thinking that, and then every year the lack of depth at D kills us.

I really don't think it did this year. The d got hit by a ton of injuries, and weber and grags sucked as our bottom 2 guys. Most teams would probably wouldn't mind a logjam of weber/sulzer/mcnabb/brennan fighting for the 6th and 7th spots

I'm surprised he hasn't found a way to tie Drury/Briere into the Corasanti case, global warming, and puppy mills.

I don't care if he's right. This thread isn't going to go anywhere positive. Too much rehashing of the same old ****.

No but he was worth the $5M that the Sabres reportedly offered him in the fall of '06, as was Briere for the same amount that he was reportedly seeking.

Sorry, but it's hard to envision that 5-year old kids are thinking much about the decisions being made by management.

That was the crux of Pegula's venting - that losing Tallinder not only hurt the team but Myers. It's fair to say that Myers hasn't played as well with anyone else as he did with Tallinder.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Tallinder in a Sabres uni again. I haven't watched him play too much this year though so I don't have a good feel for how he's been lately.

Yeah, knew he had been out, but to be honest I haven't watched him a whole lot even last season.

It would be awesome to see Myers return to early career form, perhaps with more of the defensive and rough edge he has been developing lately, and if Tallinder can help him do that, that'd be sweet. It was a sick pairing.

I know a lot of us were hoping Regehr would help Myers develop, and I think he has, particularly with physical play, but Tallinder had a much greater effect because he played with Myers so much better on the ice, whereas Myers/Regehr was just... ugh.

I could see Tallinder being available on the cheap. If New Jersey wants to resign Parise I am sure you could get Tallinder for Brennan but is it really worth it? It would save NJD around 2.5m in cap space and Brennan may make the top 6 there.

I wouldn't mind Tallinder back, but isn't he completely broken at this point? Sure he would make a great partner for Myers...but only if he's on the ice and not IR.

Assuming they resign Salvador, I find that hard to believe. He's not better than Volchenkov, Zidlicky, Greene, Fayne, Salvador or Larsson. That's not even counting Harrold who's played quite well these playoffs.

Including Tallinder they have 5 defencemen under contract next year, if they trade Tallinder that leaves 4. Zidlicky is a UFA after next season and Salvador will be 37 years old next year so there is plenty of room. Try doing some homework instead of trying to prove people wrong.

So now you're looking at 2 seasons from now instead of next season? Fayne is an RFA and is a lock to be back. Salvador and / or Harrold are expected to be back for next season. They also have Urbom in their system ready to step up. If the trade took place before next season started, I can't see Brennan making their top 6. After next season? Perhaps, but that wasn't the point I was making. Sure they could use more defensemen in their system and they'd take Brennan but he wouldn't crack their top 6.
