As funny as having Emery as a proposed starter, this isn't even worth debating as that WON'T be the cap anyways. Thread should be closed, IMO, unless we want to use it to discuss the CBA stuff this offseason and make the thread title accordingly, because there will not be a cap anywhere near 70 million next year.

I've heard Rocky's name mentioned as being one such owner. According to him, the Hawks are still losing money. I think Friedman's article quoted him saying the current CBA forces "a challenging business model."
So Rocky's even cheaper than his old man? Good to know.

he's probably just as cheap, he's just better at covering it up.

I don't remember paying this much for tickets when Wirtz was alive.

Sure Rocky will spend more, but he's bringing in way more money to be able to do so. He still put a cap on Bowman at the deadline because they were paying for Olesz and Huet.

The reason the team is "losing money" is because they are able to claim concessions and alcohol sales at games as profit for Wirtz alcohol and not the Chicago Blackhawks

Ditto the parking that is Wirtz owned.

Ever heard of inflation? Or a little thing called Supply and Demand?

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsda.../salaries/team

3rd highest spending team in the league, and that's before you factor in Huet and Olesz for a combined additional $8.75 million, putting them way ahead in 1st.

But Rocky is cheap

Can you watch Hawks homes games on TV in Chicago?

Then Rocky doesn't come close to his father in cheapness.

It doesn't cost Rocky anything to have the games on TV. If anything, it gets more money in his pocket. Putting the games on TV has nothing to do with who is cheaper, and everything to do with who is a better business man.

I hope you don't really believe any of that. It's just something you can say when you fudge the numbers so you have an argument going into negotiations such as this one.

As far as being among the owners wanting to decrease the player share, anyone ever think that:

A) He cares about the health of the league on a whole. Remember, he's in business with 29 other owners, he can't just be thinking about what's best for him

B) A cap that's more affordable for more teams could mean less revenue sharing that the Hawks need to pay into, which means more money that he can be put into scouting, development, etc.

That was more about Dollar Bill being dumb, not cheap.

But how is that fair to season ticket holders??? People get to watch the game on TV and not pay a cent!! In fact, I think all the season ticket holders would cancel their season tickets because they could watch the game on TV! We know watching on TV is the exact same experience as watching in person at the United Center.

And the Blackhawks organization still owes money to other Wirtz companies that it is paying back, thus "not making money".

i heard rocky wanted to continue the old man's ways of not showing home games on tv, but someone convinced him otherwise.

so i guess it's cool that he was convinced, and i think rocky's a good guy for the most part

**** bill wirtz though. he turned a great franchise into a joke, while the red wings were becoming a dynasty to top it off. i can't believe that cheap POS wouldn't even put home games on tv. he let the hawks become irrelevant in chicago

yeah, by not putting home games on tv, you're really gonna attract people to coming to games. good logic there ya dumbass. if he really believed people were going to come to games when the team continued to be at the bottom of the league, then he was an idiot. or cheap, or both.

sorry i really disliked bill wirtz lol

creative accounting. Like someone else said, the Hawks might be "losing" money but Rocky most definitely is not.

Exactly this, some of it isn't even all that creative though.

The Hawks pay rent to the United Center which Rocky Wirtz partially owns.
Parking is owned by the United Center which Rocky Wirtz partially owns. I believe he owns Red Top as well.
The Hawks are paying back loans from other Wirtz owned entities from the lean years.

They used to own a large amount of real estate on Michigan Ave, not sure if this is still the case.

Overall, it is estimated that Bill Wirtz's personal holdings (including stock in several companies, including Alberto-Culver and Firstar Bank) were worth about US$3 to $4 billion.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I don't believe so. Dane Placko, FOX-Chicago's investigative reporter did a report on parking ripoffs at the United Center and I'm pretty sure he interviewed their owner.

http://300level.net/?p=3618
